Short Courses

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for admission to the Mammography Short Course:

Professional Registration

• South African applicants must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
• International applicants must be registered with a HPCSA equivalent professional regulatory body in their country of practice.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold one of the following qualifications in Diagnostic Radiography:

• National Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography, or
• Bachelor of Technology (B-Tech) in Diagnostic Radiography, or
• Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Diagnostic Radiography or an equivalent qualification.

Professional Experience

Applicants must:

• Have successfully completed their compulsory Community Service year.
• Be employed in, or have access to, an accredited mammography unit to complete the required clinical training.

The following is advantageous but not compulsory:

• Radiographers who completed Mammography as a fourth-year elective during their undergraduate qualification will have foundational knowledge of mammography that will support their learning throughout the course.

This short course is designed for qualified Diagnostic Radiographers who wish to develop specialised knowledge and practical skills in mammography.

The course is suitable for:

• Registered Diagnostic Radiographers practising in the public or private healthcare sector.
• Diagnostic Radiographers seeking to expand their scope of practice in breast imaging.
• Radiographers intending to pursue a career in mammography or breast imaging services.

Note: This course is approved by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Short Learning Programme.

Assessment is conducted through a combination of theoretical and practical activities designed to evaluate the knowledge and clinical competencies required for mammography practice.

Assessments may include:

• Assignments
• Tests
• Image evaluations
• Practical assessments
• Completion of a clinical logbook

Pass Requirement: Students must obtain a minimum overall mark of 60% to successfully complete the course and qualify for certification.

Certification: Students who successfully complete all course requirements and achieve the minimum pass requirement will be awarded a Certificate in Mammography from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

The Mammography Short Course is approved by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Upon successful completion, the qualification is recognised by the HPCSA as an additional qualification for registered Diagnostic Radiographers.

Course Delivery

The Mammography Short Course is delivered through a blended learning approach comprising:

• Online lectures presented on scheduled lecture days.
• Independent self-study and guided learning activities.
• Continuous assessments throughout the course.
• Supervised clinical training.
• Practical assessments and completion of a clinical logbook.

The course covers the following key learning areas:

• Health and safety regulations
• Ethical principles, professional guidelines and codes of practice
• Breast anatomy and physiology
• Breast pathology
• Mammography physics
• Mammographic image acquisition
• Image storage, manipulation and evaluation
• Quality assurance and quality control
• Medico-legal aspects of mammography
• Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Mammography

Online lectures are presented on scheduled lecture days. The detailed timetable will be provided to registered students prior to the commencement of the course.

Application Outcome

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by mid-December 2026.
