 History of labour relations of South Africa
To gain an understanding of the events that has led to the current labour laws and the democratisation of the workplace• Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995
To gain sufficient knowledge of what the Act lays down regarding the employees right to belong to unions; organisation rights; collective agreements, bargaining councils, strikes, lockouts, unfair labour practices, unfair dismissals, and the dispute resolution mechanisms provided for in the Act (CCMA, Bargaining Councils and the Labour Court)• Basic Conditions of Employment Act 75 or 1997. 
To gain sufficient knowledge of what the Act prescribes in terms of working hours, overtime, night work, work on Saturday and public holidays, leave, sick leave, maternity leave, family responsibility leave, termination of employment, particulars of employment, deductions, remuneration and the variations permitted by the Act.• Dealing with discipline in the workplace
To gain an understanding of the principles laid down in the Code of Good Practice, Dismissals and to become familiar with the principles established in case law regarding dismissals• Protected Disclosures Act
To gain an understanding of what a Protected Disclosure is and the protections provided by the Act• Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998
To understand what the Act defines as unfair discrimination and how to eliminate this in the workplace. To be able to implement Affirmative Action and Employment Equity in the workplace.
• Code of Good Practice on the handling of Sexual Harassment in the workplace
To gain an understanding of what sexual harassment is and how to deal with it in the workplace.
• HIV in the workplace
To learn to what the Constitution, legislation and case law prescribes on how to deal with workers that are living with HIV and AIDS.
