Legal Services
The Legal Services Department functions as CPUT’s in-house legal services and resides within the Registrar’s Division under the management of the Deputy Registrar Governance and Legal Services. The Legal Services Department provides legal advisory services to the university’s management, and academic- and support service departments. The Legal Services Department does not provide legal advice or representation to individual university employees or students on any personal matters.
Services offered by the Legal Services Department include:
- Vetting and drafting of contracts (except research related contracts which are dealt with by the Technology Transfer Office (TTO))
- Legal advice including advice on compliance with legislation and institutional policies
- Litigation support to the University (except employment related matters)
- Acting as the University’s prosecutors in student disciplinary proceedings in accordance with Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Rules for students
- Assistance with the review of the Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Rules for students
- Vetting of University Policies
How to request vetting or advisory services online
You can now request the following legal services online with our faster and simpler electronic form.
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Obtain Approval
Before submitting any request, ensure you have approval from the relevant Senior Manager:
Executive Director
Dean
Senior Director
or a duly nominated and authorised officer
Step 2: Access to the Request for Vetting of Contracts or Request for Legal Advice
Use the electronic form provided by the Legal Services Department. (Download the relevant form LSC 1 form for contract vetting or LSAR 1 form for legal advice using the link provided below before completing the online form.)
Step 3: Complete the Form in Full
Fill in all required fields accurately. Incomplete forms will not be considered.
Step 4: Submit the Form
Once completed and approved, submit the form through the online platform.
Important Notes:
The Legal Services Department reserves the right not to accept a request if:
The request conflicts with the University’s interests.
The transaction has not been approved according to the University’s approval process.
LSC1 Form – Request for Vetting of Contracts
This form must be completed for requests to vet contracts and agreements prepared by CPUT Faculties, Departments, Entities, contract owners, or contracts officers.
(Please note: Research-related contracts are handled by Technology Transfer and Industrial Linkages and are not included in vetting requests to Legal Services.)
