Research Management

This section manages research outputs and publications, creative outputs and innovations. Its function is the annual submission of accredited research outputs, creative outputs, and innovation to the Department of Higher Education, Science and Technology (DHSET) to claim a subsidy. This process is governed by the DHET Research Outputs Policy of 2015. The CPUT annual internal deadline for submission to the RD Office is 31 January. This process goes through online submissions, evaluations, and assessments by the RD and appointed committee for approval before submission to the DHSET annually. The annual DHET submission date is 15 May.

Research publications recognised for subsidy purposes include:

• Articles in journals which appear on the annual lists of DHET-approved journals
• Peer-reviewed scholarly books and conference proceedings that meet specific criteria as outlined in the DHET Research Outputs Policy
• DHET Accredited Journal Lists for Publications to be Made in 2025 and Submitted in 2026 cycle:

The publications must be submitted by academics/researchers via the Clarivate Analytics online system.

User guides for submitting research outputs:

In April 2017, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) gazetted the Policy on the Evaluation of Creative Outputs and Innovations produced by South African Public Higher Education Institutions, 2017 (Vol. 40819 28 April 2017, No. 395). This policy aims to recognise and reward quality creative research outputs from public Higher Education Institutions. The creative outputs that the policy recognises for the purpose of research subsidy are in the following subfields: Fine and Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, Performance and Dance, Design, Film and Television and Literary Arts. Under Innovations, the policy recognises patents and plant breeder’s rights.

The Department has developed an implementation tool to guide public higher education institutions in preparing submissions of creative research outputs. The guidelines are supplementary to the policy and must be read in conjunction.

Creative outputs and innovations are submitted annually to the DHET on the 30th of September.

How to submit creative outputs and innovation:

• Creative outputs must be submitted to the faculty by completing the Creative Outputs Template with all the supporting documents
• Granted patents and plants breeders’ rights will be obtained from the Technology Transfer Office (TTO)

CPUT is a member of The South African Technology Network (SATN) Consortium, and together with other University of Technologies (i.e Central University of Technology, Durban University of Technology, Tshwane University of Technology & Walter Sisulu University), they implemented a web-based RIMS called Clarivate Analytics/ Converis. RIMS aims to provide a common application platform to support all research processes. In the Research Directorate, the RIMS section is tasked with keeping up-to-date records of research outputs and submitting these outputs to the DHET for subsidy and supporting the Grants Unit with research proposal development and tracking. Creative outputs and Innovations must be submitted through the online system.

The Research Directorate records celebrates and publicises CPUT’s excellence in research, innovation and uptake through the institution’s annual Research Report. It also showcases these achievements at the institution’s annual Research Festival, which celebrates this excellence through a display of vibrant exhibitions, followed by an awards ceremony and gala brunch.
