Centre for Sport Business and Technology Research (CSBTR)

Overview

The Centre for Sport Business and Technology Research (CSBTR) is located within the Sport Management Department in the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences (FBMS). It is physically located at the Newlands satellite campus, at the iconic sport venue, Newlands Cricket Ground. The Centre includes the Sport Performance Laboratory (SPL), which features world class testing equipment and specialist research staff and technicians. The physical site has a dedicated postgraduate learning and research space, with direct access to the Sport Knowledge Hub (library), that houses a high-quality selection of sport-themed books and digital resources. The Centre provides the physical space and cutting-edge technology to pursue research and enhance education and technical training in terms of sport business and performance.

In line with ONE SMART CPUT, the Centre promotes excellence and innovation in sport business and technology research. It aims to create leaders in the field of applied sport and leisure research who deliver solutions to South Africa’s scientific and socio-economic challenges. The CSBTR engages in trans-disciplinary research, primarily aligned with two CPUT key focus areas, namely: Bioeconomy & Biotechnology; and Human, Health & Social Dynamics. However, it also encompasses projects with a focus on the Digital Society, and The Environment, Climate Change and Sustainability. These correspond to the UN Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) focus areas: (#3) Good Health and Wellbeing; and (#8) Decent Work and Economic Growth.
