Statement by CPUT Convocation on student protests
Dear CPUT Convocants and Alumni
Let me take this opportunity to thank everyone who placed their confidence in the Convocation leadership elected in September 2015. Having accepted the responsibility to lay a solid foundation for this statutory body, our institution was hit by what originated as a genuine societal call, lead by student leadership across the country under the #FeesMustFall campaign. I thus produce this statement with deep sadness on the realities the University is confronted with, as one of the hardest hit higher education institutions.
Exams suspended with immediate effect
Because of the prolonged protest action on our campuses and the trauma that students and staff have experienced, we have been under severe pressure for some time now to postpone examinations. We resisted this as we were aware that the postponement of examinations could have a major impact on the future careers of some of our students.
