Thousands of learners flock to CPUT’s annual Open Day
Mastering the technology required to send a satellite into space, saving lives with your specialised knowledge of emergency medical care, designing a collection that wows fashionistas, mapping and navigating the oceans, or protecting and conserving South Africa’s incredible wildlife – the sky is literally the limit when it comes to choosing a course of study and eventual career path at CPUT. To highlight the vast array of programmes offered by the Western Cape’s largest university, CPUT’s annual Open Day is now in full swing.
CPUT hosts former Spacecraft Commander on 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first space flight
As the world commemorates 50 years since Yuri Gagarin became the first human being in outer space after his spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth in April 1961, Russian cosmonaut and former Red Army test pilot, Valery Tokarev, visited CPUT's Bellville campus to mark the epic event. Tokarev is a guest of The South African National Space Agency (SANSA), who work closely with CPUT's very own French South African Institute of Technology.
A warm welcome for first-years as 2011 academic year begins
“New students help us recharge our antique ways of thinking and how we empower young minds to become productive citizens of this great country, South Africa.” Those were the words of welcome of Vice-Chancellor Prof Vuyisa Mazwi-Tanga, as first-year students and their parents and guardians gathered on the Cape Town, Bellville and Wellington campuses of CPUT at the start of Orientation Week. “Students are very important members of the CPUT family, as it is through their best performance that the university is regarded as successful, stable and sustainable.”
CPUT “A-Twitter” following first-ever RITAL Conference
“I just told my students that we are going to have our lecture via Twitter and that they needn’t attend class on the specified date”. Marian Pike, Public Relations Management lecturer had a rapt audience at the first ever annual Research and Innovation in Teaching and Learning (RITAL) Conference in December. Pike’s Twitter lecture was a world-first, and her RITAL conference paper, titled ‘Learning tweet by tweet: Reshaping lectures for Twitter’, highlighted the benefits of using the popular social network and micro-blogging service in education.

It’s a profession as old as any human activity and requires painstaking concentration, meticulousness, creativity and imagination. And yet again students of the Jewellery Design Department on CPUT’s Cape Town campus have shown they are up to the task.
FID Design Exhibition Preview

Design-junkies, budding film-makers, fashion-fundis and multi-media mavens will be joining forces this Tuesday 23rd November at the Cape Town campus of CPUT. In an evening filled with spectacular designs and concepts, the Faculty of Informatics and Design hosts one of the highlights of its calendar - the annual FID Year End Exhibition, themed "Come See my Work".
