Team work makes the dream work

The final ceremony of Autumn Graduation will be a proud moment for the Centre for Substation Automation and Energy Management Systems (CSAEMS) with four of their own receiving their DEng: Electrical Engineering degrees.

Three of the four, Mkululi Mnguni, Quinton Bart and Carl Kriger are lecturers while postdoctoral fellow Yohan Mfoumboulou also completed his MTech with CPUT in 2014. All four were supervised by Prof Raynitchka Tzoneva while Mnguni was co-supervised by Dr Senthil Krishnamurthy.

“Last year was a very difficult year for all of us. It was hard work and it had to be completed over a short time. We had classes, work in the lab, students to supervise while they still had to complete their theses. We decided together to form a working group. We met every Wednesday and everyone had to present what he had done during the week,” said Tzoneva.

Bart attributed the group’s success to these weekly meetings.
“If there were any problems we could all suggest solutions. It also motivated us as sometimes you didn’t make much progress while someone else did. This made you work harder.”

All four theses contributed to the development of new models, methods, algorithms and software and hardware for their implementations in the field of IEC61850 standard application and further development for protection, automation, control and automation of Smart grid systems.

Mnguni’s thesis is titled IEC61850 Standard-Based Adaptive Load Shedding Scheme for Distribution Power Networks while Bart’s thesis is titled Synchrophasor Estimation Algorithms for Optimal Implementation on a Digital Platform.
Kriger’s thesis is titled Development of IEC61850 Standard-Based Object Models for Condition Monitoring while Mfoumboulou’s thesis is titled Design and Implementation of an Adaptive Networked Control System.

The deliverables of the theses were verified using real-time industrial grade equipment in the research laboratory of the centre and are directly implementable in the Eskom power network, said Mnguni. Mfoumboulou added that these deliverables make the research work in the CSAEMS unique.

Kriger said the group were thankful to Tzoneva who was available to them “day and night” and motivated them to ensure their work was of a high standard.
“We are grateful to her for all her encouragement.”

Bart said the group is committed to continuing their research.
“We have a very good foundation for continued research and a lot of novel contributions can be made towards the development of a Smart grid.”
