Absa Cape Epic cycles its way to CPUT

Voted the best Absa Cape Epic host village in 2015 has paid off for CPUT.

The university has once again been handpicked to be part of South Africa’s South Africa’s premier mountain bike event, which takes place this March.

Last year, riders called CPUT’s Wellington Campus home during the second last stage of the competition and this year the university is looking forward to hosting more than 1 000 of the world’s top mountain bike riders.

CPUT Public Relations and Events Officer, Catherine Cloete, says it a huge honour for the university to once again participate in the event.

“By participating in the Absa Cape Epic, we are able to promote the town of Wellington as well as our Wellington Campus,” she says.

This year, Cloete says apart from just being a host village, CPUT has entered two teams.

Team CPUT, which is made up of a staff member and alumnus, is fully sponsored by CPUT, and will compete in the mixed category.

Team CPUT PPS will compete in the Exxarro category, which is a development category that is reserved for riders from formally disadvantaged backgrounds and who are under the age of 26. The anchor sponsor of the development team is the Professional Provident Society.

By entering two teams, Cloete says they hope to raise the profile of the sport at CPUT as well as attract potential students who are excelling in sport.

The riders will arrive at CPUT on Wednesday, 16 March, which marks the end of stage three of the race. The following day the riders will set out on a 71 km race, which will also end at the Wellington Campus. On Friday, 18 March, the riders will leave CPUT for Stellenbosch as they set out on stage five of the race.
