The spirit of equity reigned supreme during the elections of the Convocation’s executive committee at its Annual General Meeting which was held at the Bellville Campus on Saturday.

Members at the meeting insisted on electing a committee which is reflective of the university’s demographics, including gender parity.

City of Cape Town Councillor and CPUT council membe Bheki Hadebe was elected as the president of the Convocation and the following members were voted into the executive committee.

This included Dr Karen Dos Reis, Prof Karabo Ntwampe, Linda Manqoyi, Shahieda Hendricks, Mandla Ntlanganiso, Frans Swanepoel, Thato Molaolwa, Zanele Figlan and Lindie Jantjies.

Vice-chancellor, Dr Prins Nevhutalu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research, Technology, Innovation and Partnerships, Dr Chris Nhlapo and Registrar Nikile Ntsababa are ex-officio members of the committee by virtue of the offices they occupy in the university.

Hadebe thanked the members for the confidence they expressed in voting him into the presidency unopposed.

The convocation supports and enhances the university’s vision and mission and is composed of students, graduates, academic staff members, professor’s emeriti and retired permanent academic staff members who have been in the university’s employ for not less than 10 years before retirement.

Opening the meeting, Vice-chancellor, Dr Prins Nevhutalu, said the convocation should drive unity in the institution among students and alumni.

“The convocation is a key structure in the passing on of CPUT’s culture and tradition,” said Nevhutalu.

He said he hopes that the convocation would one day hosts an event for generations of the university’s alumni to gather and network among each other.
