Hollywood dress success

A dress designed by a CPUT lecturer has stolen the show at a red carpet screening for a Hollywood blockbuster.

Wearing the stunning beaded and silk creation, model Tanit Phoenix held her own alongside A-listers like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie at the Maleficent premier in Los Angeles recently.

Fashion Design lecturer Jas Myburgh spent months working on the gothic dress which has a unique South African twist - Ndebele inspired beadwork.

He first met Tanit in 2006 when they worked together on a Cosmopolitan magazine cover and kept in contact ever since. Last year she approached him about designing a few dresses for the Maleficent world premieres, that stars her boyfriend Sharlto Copley of District 9 fame.

“She could wear anyone from Gucci to Versace but she wants to remain true to her identity and nationality,” he says.

Tanit met Myburgh for a range of fittings during her December vacation and the black beaded dress was one of the dresses he created during that time.

The stunner is expected to wear his other design to premieres in London, Japan and Australia soon and Myburgh is keeping those designs close to his chest.

“I can’t really say what they look like except that they are all South African inspired but with a flair for the country she will be in,” he says.

Myburgh says he is thrilled the design was such an international hit and is hoping to design Tanit’s Oscar Awards ceremony dress if Maleficent is nominated at a later stage.
