Leading researcher explores Cuban education system

A leading education and social science researcher, CPUT’s Dr Clive Kronenberg is set to get a first-hand glimpse into one of the world’s most successful educational systems.

During the next two-months, Kronenberg will explore the Cuban education system.

Cuba has long held an impressive record of high educational standards, with adult literacy rates ranking a notable 99.8%. Schools also boast a learner teacher ratio of 12 to 1.

Kronenberg’s opportunity to explore this education system came about through an invite from the Cuban Ministry of Education and Culture. This will be his third visit to the country.

In 2005 Kronenberg was one of eight individuals selected by the Department of Arts and Culture to be part an official delegation that visited Cuba for the purposes of cementing bi-lateral cultural ties.

Currently Africa’s foremost scholar on matters related to Cuba, Kronenberg says he is looking forward to gaining insight into this unique education system.

During his stay Kronenberg will present three papers at various conferences and will also visit several higher education institutions.

However, he says the highlight of his expedition will be visits to schools and the opportunity to interact with teachers and learners. Here he will gain insight into schools’ operations, course offerings, curriculums and teaching methods.

“I am looking forward to the field work,” he says.

Kronenberg plans to share his findings with staff members in the Education and Social Sciences Faculty on his return.
