Students sharpen their debating skills

alt

The CPUT Debating Society, Bellville Campus, held its first 2008 debating workshop on the 1st of March 2008. The workshop was in preparation for the 2008 Debating Nationals, which are due to take place in July this year.

Fifteen students participated in the workshop. It was facilitated by the Chairperson of Stellenbosch University's Debating Society, Piet Olivier, who facilitated similar workshops for CPUT students in 2007. Students discussed a range of topical issues related to tertiary education. They also received training in some of the skills of a successful debater, such as self-confidence and public speaking.

The CPUT Debating Society is strengthening its relationship with Stellenbosch’s Debating Society and is hoping to host an intervarsity competition with them very soon. The Society will also be hosting a number of debating events at the Bellville and Cape Town campuses. Inter-residence debating is already in progress.

The next workshop will be on Saturday the 8th of March and students interested in finding out more about debating are encouraged to attend. Debating is not only an excellent CV builder, but also provides the opportunity to speak one’s mind and show independence of thought.
