The Department of Information Technology offers a wide range of formal qualifications and non-formal courses in IT and related disciplines. It also offers specialized training in Information Technology in the areas of Applications Development (Software Development), Communication Networks, and Multimedia Technology. The department supports a large graduate and postgraduate programme where the research is directed at both community and industry interests.
The department also offers a wide range of non-formal courses in collaboration with the IT industry. Several semi-autonomous business units operate within the department. These units are focused on the professional development of undergraduate and graduate students in delivering research and development services to the community and industry.
The department continues to provide leadership in curriculum development, especially to the Universities of Technology sector. In this regard, the department also has a defining role in the Higher Education ICT Association (HEICTA) and within the Further Education and Training (FET) sector.
