Interior Design
Interior Design
The practice of interior design relates to architecture on the one hand and to industrial design on the other. The aim of the course is to develop awareness and skills ranging from design in buildings to furniture design and could be defined as the creative problem-solving process applied to the practice solution of three-dimensional programs, primarily within the environment of buildings.
Knowledge of materials' performance and the possibilities they offer in construction is thoroughly researched and understood. Our students are well-versed in the skills required to communicate their design intention and be productively employable upon graduation.
The Interior Design program at CPUT is committed to the development of a theoretical basis for the study and practice of design where creativity is linked with and runs parallel to theory. The program's educational agenda is to challenge the accepted assumptions about Interior Design and test new ideas through design project work.

Course Aim
Graduates are equipped to enable registration as a Candidate Senior Interior Designer, capable of designing and detailing the interior of multi-storey buildings, independently researching technological detail and bespoke joinery. The competency of an interior designer would include the design and technological detailing of internal building alterations, which respond to relevant and appropriate interior design solutions. Their skills will include the design and management of public and private sectors within the built environment.
Graduates can apply to the African Institute of Interior Design Professionals (IID) to enable registration as a Candidate Senior Interior Designer.
Career Opportunities
The Candidate's Senior Interior Designer is responsible for applying a technological working drawing package that accurately documents the design. The main activities associated with this field are design development and production of drawings, detailing, presentation of drawings, model making, site supervision and monitoring, and liaison with clients, engineers, municipalities, quantity surveyors, and contractors.
Once the necessary experience has been gained, the Candidate Senior Interior Designer is able to competently handle small to medium-sized work independently. This would, for example, include retail, corporate, hospitality, public sector buildings, or the development of educational spaces.
Duration, Mode and Venue
This is a two-year part-time programme offered through block-release, in a blended format that involves online learning, on-campus blocks and work-based mentoring. On-campus sessions take place at 80 Roeland Street. Employment in an interior design practice or architectural office is compulsory.
Admission Requirements
A Diploma in Interior Design (or a recognised equivalent qualification) with a 60% average pass mark in the final year of the Diploma is required. Applicants must also obtain a minimum of 60% for Interior Design 3 and Interior Technology 3. Those who do not meet these requirements or have completed their Diploma (or equivalent qualification) at another institution are subject to a selection process. This process consists of a digital portfolio. The portfolio should contain samples of any work that reflects the student’s design and presentation skills and responsive technological development, demonstrating an integration of design and technology.
