Centre for Sport Business and Technology Research (CSBTR)

The Centre for Sport Business and Technology Research (CSBTR) is located within the Sport Management Department in the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences (FBMS). It is physically located at the Newlands satellite campus, at the iconic sports venue, Newlands Cricket Ground. The Centre includes the Sports Performance Laboratory (SPL), which features world-class testing equipment, specialist research staff, and technicians. The physical site has a dedicated postgraduate learning and research space, with direct access to the Sport Knowledge Hub (library), which houses a high-quality selection of sport-themed books and digital resources. The Centre provides the physical space and cutting-edge technology to pursue research and enhance education and technical training in terms of sports business and performance.
In line with ONE SMART CPUT, the Centre promotes excellence and innovation in sports business and technology research. It aims to create leaders in the field of applied sport and leisure research who deliver solutions to South Africa’s scientific and socio-economic challenges. The CSBTR engages in trans-disciplinary research, primarily aligned with two CPUT key focus areas: Bioeconomy & Biotechnology and Human, Health, & Social Dynamics. However, it also encompasses projects focusing on the Digital Society, The Environment, Climate Change and Sustainability. These correspond to the UN Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) focus areas: (#3) Good Health and Well-being and (#8) Decent Work and Economic Growth.
The CSBTR is based on two main themes: 1) Sport, Wellness, Equity & Technology (SWET) and 2) Management & Leadership in Sport Business.
