The Tourism and Events industry has been regarded as one of the most contributing industries to the reputation of Cape Town as a top tourist destination. Located on the District Six Campus in Cape Town and at a satellite campus in Wellington, the Department of Tourism and Events Management prides itself in developing holistic future professionals.
The department comprises a diverse team of academics with valuable experience in higher education and industry practices. As a highly recognised department, students will be able to combine theoretical practices and hands-on practical experiences relevant to current industry practices. The programmes offered by the department focus on preparing dynamic individuals through a vast range of academic, professional and personal skills for their overall development for Tourism and Events Management careers.
The department has a high focus on Tourism and Events Research. The Centre for Tourism and Research in Africa (CETRA) predominantly drives the research and particularly focuses on contract research with various institutions, private sector and government. The department prides itself on the valuable relations it has with industry and other stakeholders such as the South African Association for Conference Industry (SAACI), as well as a member of international academic associations such as the Travel and Tourism Research Association (TTRA) and the Tourism Educators Association of South Africa(TESA). Student Exchange Programme
Anathi Booysen
Anathi Booysen, a 4th year Tourism Management student, is currently spending three months in Ravensburg, Germany as part of the Erasmus Exchange Programme at DHBW Ravensburg.
She describes the experience as exciting and eye opening. So far, Anathi has explored cities such as Stuttgart and Ulm and experienced snow for the very first time during an excursion to Oberstdorf, where she quickly learned that layering is essential. She has grown especially fond of Germany’s bakery bread and snacks and has developed a strong appreciation for the country’s commitment to sustainability, recycling, and waste management.
Although navigating the city and overcoming the language barrier were challenging at first, Anathi is taking German classes and slowly settling into her new environment. While finding the right spices to cook with remains a small struggle, she continues to embrace the experience with curiosity and enthusiasm as she looks forward to discovering more of Germany.
Courtney Wyngaard
Courtney Wyngaard, also a 4th year Event Management student and is taking part in the Erasmus Exchange Programme at DHBW Ravensburg with Anathi for three months. She describes her first few weeks in Germany as challenging but truly life changing.
Living in a new country has pushed Courtney to become more independent, managing daily responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning, and navigating her surroundings on her own. She has begun attending German language classes, joined a gym to maintain her fitness routine, and taken part in event seminars that have given her valuable insight into the global tourism and events industry across Europe, England, and Australia.
Some of her highlights so far include visiting Ulm Cathedral, which left a lasting impression, and exploring the Porsche Museum, where she even had the chance to sit inside a Porsche. Courtney is excited to continue learning, both academically and culturally, as her exchange journey unfolds.
Both students are learning far more than what is taught in the classroom. Through language, culture, and everyday experiences, they are gaining a deeper understanding of the global tourism and events industry and the different ways people connect, communicate, and live. The journey hasn’t been easy, but it has already been incredibly rewarding, and there is so much more still to come.
