    DSJP Colloquium: Celebrating Partnership and Social Justice

    The Designing for Social Justice Partnership (DSJP) recently hosted its annual Colloquium—a vibrant space dedicated to celebration, reflection, and taking stock of our collective progress. Bringing together students and staff partners from UCT, CPUT, and UWC, the event was designed as an interactive space to explore the journey of our collaborative projects and to share the transformative power of student-staff partnerships (SSPs).Day Overview

    The colloquium was structured to move participants through different modes of engagement, from creative storytelling to deep, structured reflection.

    Welcome and Connection

    The day opened with a warm welcome and an overview of the programme, setting the stage for a day of celebration.

    Creative Energizer

    Participants dived into an intense, team-based "tallest, free-standing hat" construction challenge. This activity, requiring creativity, resourcefulness, and collaboration, served as an energizing start to our time together.

    Project Storymaking

    In this core creative session, partners composed stories of their project journeys. Using arts-based representations—drawing inspiration from the "River of Life" metaphor—partners presented their work, reflecting on project objectives, resources, plans, challenges, and lessons learned.

    Gallery Walk

    The event transformed into an interactive exhibition. Attendees moved through the room to engage with peer projects, using QR codes at each station to celebrate and affirm the efforts of colleagues and students across the partnership.

    World Café

    The afternoon featured a mixture of small and large group discussions. Through a "free writing" exercise, participants engaged in personal reflection before moving into group discussions focused on advice for the model, shifts from original proposals, and what these experiences mean for the future of student-staff partnerships.

    A Focus on Impact

    The colloquium provided a crucial opportunity for the research team and partners to think about future engagements and outputs. By facilitating space for honest conversation and creative expression, the DSJP Colloquium reinforced our commitment to fostering inclusive, community-responsive learning environments and advancing socially just co-creation.
