Tough start for CPUT rugby team

FNB CPUT started the journey to defend the rugby title they won last year on the back foot as the defending champions lost their opening match of the 2020 Varsity Shield.
The boys went down 12 – 22 to FNB Walter Sisulu University (WSU) at the Bellville Campus Stadium on Friday night.
Enjoying support of the strong blowing wind, the visitors dominated the early stages of the match and almost scored a try as early as the 14th minute. After sustaining waves of attack, the Eastern Cape-based side was awarded a penalty kick which they successfully converted, making it 0 – 3 to WSU on the 16th minute.
As the first half matured FNB CPUT started launching its own waves of attack and almost scored a try right at the end of the half as the visitors were saved by the whistle.
The visitors were the first team to suck blood shortly after the commencement of the second half by scoring a try and successfully converted to take the score to 0 – 10. The hosts re-organised themselves and responded with a try of their own, which they successfully converted to make the scoreboard read 7 – 10.
The visitors picked up from where they left off and continued their dominance of the match and forced the home team to commit errors deep inside their own half. WSU were later rewarded with a try, but their kicker failed to covert it and the score was 22-7.
In the closing stages of the match, the hosts showed glimpses of hope that the team might take charge of the proceedings and launched its own phases of attacks. During the referee’s optional time the hosts scored their second try of the night. The match ended 12 – 22 in favour of the visitors.
