Exciting infrastructure projects taking shape

A range of major infrastructure projects, including a state-of-the-art student residence, are under construction on CPUT’s campuses.

According to the Infrastructure Development and Facilities Management Department, the residence on the Navarre Residence site of the Wellington campus, will have 212 beds and is expected to be completed in September next year.

Student accommodation is set to receive a further boost with the refurbishment of the St Peters Student Residence in Observatory expected to be finalised by month-end.

In addition, the restoration of Greenoaks in the Elizabeth Women’s Residence Complex is nearing completion.

The safety of staff and students are a top priority for the institution and the installation of access control and CCTV systems on all campuses is expected to be completed by the end of April next year.

Other major projects which will benefit the CPUT community include:

  • The restoration of the Mechanical Engineering Building on the Bellville campus. The project is scheduled to be completed by 30 September 2020.
  • The restoration of the staff room in the Teachers' Education Building on the Mowbray campus. The project is scheduled to be completed by 30 September 2020.
  • The restoration of Lecture Theatre 3 on the District Six campus. The project is scheduled to be completed by 31 October 2020.
  • Alteration and renovation of the Science Building rooms on District Six campus to accommodate the Architecture and Interior Design Department. The project is scheduled to be completed by 30 November 2020.

Alternatives for student accommodation

An online database, launched last year to assist CPUT students in the hunt for safe off-campus accommodation, has grown to include more than 700 beds.

The Off-Campus Housing Accreditation Program (OCHAP) aims to ease the pressure on student housing.

It allows students to trawl the database for private accommodation, which has been approved and accredited by CPUT officials.

The number of available beds is expected to increase to between 800 and 1 000 this year.

“Any service provider around CPUT campuses can apply through an online application system.

Students can freely select their place of choice in the bracket they can afford,” says Phillip Chibvuri from the CPUT Residence Business & Risk Assessment Centre.

To qualify, service providers have to provide five beds or more and adhere to a range of requirements. Officials will inspect the accommodation to ensure that the accommodation is safe and suitable for students while proof of ownership and other requirements will also be checked.

Owners pay a once-off fee before being added to the online database.

Lease agreements are also vetted.

“The project has the potential to change the student accommodation market and create a system where local universities adopt a common regulatory approach when dealing with accrediting properties,” says Chibvuri.
