Track your application

CPUT has launched an online tracking system which allows applicants for the 2014 academic year to follow the progress of their applications.

The Application Tracking System was created by CPUT Web Developer, Lovemore Nalube, together with Director of Academic Administration, Kuselwa Marala and Acting Coordinatior of the Admission and Registration Centre, Llwellyn Appel as a solution to the high demand for clarity on application status.

The tracking system can be found on the CPUT homepage under the section “Study at CPUT”.

When using the tracking system, applicants are able to find information about their application status (accepted, provisionally accepted, not accepted or in progress) as well as campus and course details.

The tracker system has also been integrated on CPUT’s Facebook page, allowing applicants to track their statuses directly from their social media accounts.

The next phase of the project is to incorporate the tracker system with a mobile application service.

The Application Tracking System can be accessed via: http://www.cput.ac.za/study/track

CPUT launches new website

CPUT has a brand-new website. After four months of hard work by the Web Office and Marketing and Communication Department, the new corporate website launched on 27 May.

Thanks to an improved search engine, layout and navigation structure, the new website is more user-friendly. Visitors to the website can now easily find what they are looking for.The website relies on state-of-the-art technology, allowing users to access it on any type of device, from mobile phones to tablets. The website accessibility has been improved for the visually impaired by having a link to enlarge the text, making it more legible. The new website has been optimised to make its pages as small as possible, thereby allowing it to load very fast.Prospective students can expect a host of information on the website, from how to apply to CPUT to the fees of each course. Current students can look forward to a designated Students section, where information on student life is featured, such as sports and on-campus events. The website design, programming and content was all done by CPUT staffers Marick Hornsveld (Web Editor), Lovemore Nalube (Web Developer), and Ashley Jones (Assistant Web Developer). The CPUT website uses a Content Management System (CMS) called Joomla. It is one of the most popular CMS systems out there. It is Open Source, thereby allowing the Web Office to customise it to suit CPUT’s needs. To read more about the redesign of CPUT website, please visit our blog. The Web Office would love to hear from you about the new website, send us your comments by filling in this short form.

CPUT launches mobile app

CPUT services and information are now available at your fingertips.

Thanks to innovative staff members at the Web Office, the University has launched its first Mobile App, which will allow individuals to access a range of CPUT information and services from a smartphone.

Developed by Lovemore Nalube and Ashley Jones, the Mobile App will link you to many things including course announcements, paperless meeting documents, examination results, prospectus, application status and much more.

“It’s like having your university in your pocket,” says Nalube.

The Mobile App has been intelligently customized and depending on whether you log on as a student, staff member or a member of the public, the app will show you tailored information.

Nalube says the Mobile App has a vibrant look and feel and elements such as the weather, news and student jobs have been incorporated.

To date, over 1000 people have downloaded the app from the Android Play Store and have given the app a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

“We will continue to improve the app and release it to Apple and Windows phones soon,” says Nalube.

Vice-Chancellor, Dr Prins Nevhutalu says the launch of the Mobile App is a milestone for CPUT and will play a vital role in enhancing the lives of students as well as staff members.

CPUT’s live video streaming wins international award

Without it thousands of people around the world would miss seeing their classmates and loved ones graduate.

Now CPUT’s highly successful live streaming project has another feather in its cap having scooped the prestigious Gold Quill Award from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).

The Gold Quill Awards program recognizes business communication excellence globally and is acknowledged as one of the most prestigious awards programs in the industry.

CPUT’s live streaming has already been recognized locally as the leader in its field from the Marketing, Advancement and Communication in Education program (MACE).

It’s not hard to see why considering the live video streaming project attracted over 15 000 viewers during the recent graduation ceremonies.

The IABC award will be presented at an Excellence Gala, to be held in June in San Francisco.

“It’s great to receive an international reward for this project especially since this type of service is still in its infancy in South Africa due to a constrained broadband environment,” says Student Affairs Student Development Officer Derek Stocken.

“The Student Affairs Student Media team handle the video transmission from the venue while the website integration and streaming server management is handled by the Web Office. A great partnership with the CTS Networks division has ensured that the streaming goes smoothly with minimal impact to the network.”

Head of the Web Office Lovemore Nalube says the award puts CPUT on par with the best in the world.
