Design Graduate Exhibition open till Friday

The country’s latest crop of hot young designers showcased their work at the annual Informatics and Design year-end exhibition on Tuesday.

The fashion show is the highlight of the exhibition which will open for the rest of the week from 9am to 4pm and takes place in the Multi-purpose Hall at the Cape Town campus.

The doors of the entire design school are flung open for the four-day event and prospective students, parents, industry partners and staff are invited to peruse the graduates’ body of work.

This includes the journalism, jewellery, industrial, graphic, fashion, and photography departments.

Yesterday fashion students exhibited their work to a jam-packed audience filled with journalists, photographers, industry artists and family and friends.

The big winner of the night was BTech student Tamara Dyson who was recently picked as the winner of the Mr Price/Elle Rising Star award.

Earlier that evening she also received a special commendation from the Dean of the Informatics and Design Faculty for scoring the highest marks in her class.

Other students to receive special industry awards included Kelli Botha who recently shared a Woolworths shop front window exhibit with fellow student Caela Viviers.

Two CPUT fashion design students have scored the opportunity of a lifetime.

Third-year students Kelli Botha and Caela Viviers won the top prize in a project collaboration between CPUT, Woolworths women’s wear division and Kingston University in London. The prize saw them intern at Woolworths as well as travel to the UK for a week, visiting Kingston University and attending the London Graduate Fashion Week where more than 200 institutions showcase their best student collections.

Kelli and Caela’s work went on display in the Waterfront Woolworths window last week and this week it is the turn of two winners from Kingston University.

The whimsical display featured the designs, rough sketches and toiles (sample garments) of both students.

“It was amazing to see our work in the Woolworths window... we think they did a wonderful job with the layout and display- it really looked great,” says Caela.

“We are very grateful for the amazing opportunity they have given us.”

Both young designers are busy completing their graduate collections at the moment and say the once-in-a-lifetime experience has improved the quality of their work infinitely.

The Woolworths, CPUT and Kingston project have been managed by Annadine Vlok and Maryna Bergh both Fashion Design lecturers.

Bergh has also done exchange lecturing at Kingston University as part of the project, for the last three years.
