Players that rock

CPUT students and staff members came out in force to #backourboytjies for the university’s inaugural match in the FNB Varsity Shield presented by Steinhoff International.

Students, in their blue supporters T-shirts, travelled from far and wide for the Cape Derby to support the team as they squared off against our neighbours UWC yesterday.

The match was broadcast live on Supersport 1 and was a nail biting affair with FNB UWC ultimately winning the Cape Derby by a slim margin of 26 to 23.

Commentators commended the resilience of the CPUT team as they ably squared up to the experienced UWC squad, who were favourites to win after making it into the finals last year.

CPUTs fighting spirit was awarded when Christiaan Smit won the Player that Rocks award.

The match was closely analysed by Head of Western Province Rugby Thelo Wakefield and Currie Cup coach John Dobson who took time out of their busy schedules to meet the CPUT team a few hours before kick-off to do a jersey handover and pep talk.

Wakefield told the team that Western Province Rugby would be partnering with the CPUT team to transfer some of the extensive knowledge they had.

“You worked hard to be the owner of that jersey for 80 minutes. We came here to support you because we believe in you,” he told the team.

Dobson commended the support from CPUT management saying the backing from the top is critical for the future success of rugby at the institution.

“For the first time you have broken into this competition so you have nothing to lose and everything to win.”

The team’s next game will take place on Monday when they will face FNB Rhodes at the Rhodes Great Field.

The first opportunity to see our boys playing on home turf will be on February 27 when they will face off against FNB UKZN in Wellington. This match is scheduled to start at 18:30.

Back our boytjies!

CPUT’s dynamic rugby team will make their debut in the hotly contested FNB Varsity Shield presented by Steinhoff International this week when they will square off against UWC in the opening match.

FNB CPUT is making history as the first-ever from the institution to qualify for the competition and the captain and his team are appealing to the CPUT community to back our boytjies.

“CPUT students must be proud of this institution. It’s our first time to enter Varsity Shield so they must come to support us. I think they are excited to see us playing in Varsity Shield and we will do our best,” said team captain, Camagu Dlisani, a third-year Human Resource Management student.

He said the team had been training hard and their preparations had included a training camp.

Varsity Shield is played in round robin format while the final games will be knock outs.

Last year’s competition was won by the Wits team who beat UWC in the final.

Seven teams are competing for the title this year.

Thursday’s opening match between FNB CPUT and FNB UWC will be hosted by UWC and is scheduled to start at 16.45. It will be broadcast live on Supersport 1.

The CPUT team’s first home game will be on February 27 when they’ll face off against FNB UKZN in Wellington.

Tickets on sale at the UWC Sports Stadium, R10 when you produce your staff or student card or R20 without.

FNB CPUT in Varsity Shield semi-finals

Defending champions FNB CPUT have secured their place in the Varsity Shield semi-finals.

On Friday, the team scored five tries against the FNB WSU All Blacks to claim a 31-5 bonus-point victory.

FNB CPUT made their attacking intentions clear from the outset of this contest. An unrelenting approach at the gain line – complemented by the sharp decision-making of flyhalf Feghorn-Leigh Snyders – yielded four tries and the bonus point before half-time.

The All Blacks fought hard to stay in the game. However, their discipline let them down in the latter stages, as Thembani Kori and Dale Titus were sent to the sin bin. The bonus-point win sees FNB CPUT leapfrogging FNB UKZN Impi and finishing second in the FNB Varsity Shield standings.

FNB UKZN scores victory against FNB CPUT

FNB UKZN Impi triumphed over defending champions FNB CPUT at the CPUT Sports Stadium in Bellville last night.

The winger Zamakuhle Zulu scored a late try as the FNB UKZN Impi beat FNB CPUT 20-18 to finish the weekend at the top of the FNB Varsity Shield standings.

The Impi were the more physical and accurate side throughout the first half. Their scrum put the hosts under pressure, and their big men won the battle at the gain line. FNB CPUT stayed in touch via the reliable kicking boot of flyhalf Feghorn-Leigh Snyders.

The score was 10-6 to the Impi at half-time. An improved showing at the collisions and breakdowns allowed the hosts to claw their way back into the contest. As the end of the game approached, they were in a strong position to claim a significant victory. FNB UKZN showed superior intensity and composure at the death, though.

A sweeping move was expertly finished by Zulu and Jarryd Nicholls’ conversation, which gave the visitors a narrow win. The reigning champions will be disappointed with their performances throughout their home leg. After losing against the FNB UFH Blues on Friday and Sunday’s loss against FNB UKZN, they will be hard-pressed to secure home advantage for the semi-finals.

In Friday’s game, Migcobo Bovu scored a late intercept try to boost the FNB UFH Blues to a shock 16-14 win over FNB CPUT in Bellville. FNB CPUT was in control in the final stages until the inside centre intercepted a loose pass and raced more than 80m to score.

Keith Chiwara’s conversion allowed the visitors to claim the lead and, ultimately, the victory. FNB UFH dedicated the win to their director of rugby, Elliot Fana, who tragically passed away in a car accident on 22 March. The reigning champions backed their running game initially but enjoyed limited success against a physical and well-organised Fort Hare defence.

The visitors bossed the scrums and, despite the windy conditions, Chiwara managed to convert this set-piece dominance into points. FNB UFH led 9-7 at half-time. The battle at the breakdowns and collisions was particularly fierce. While they copped a hiding at the scrums, FNB CPUT showed plenty of fight at the tackle to repel the Blues after the break. Fullback Caine Stadler finished a sweeping attacking move in the corner, and a touchline conversion by flyhalf Feghorn-Leigh Snyders gave the hosts a five-point lead going into the final quarter. Immediately after conceding seven points, the Blues copped their second yellow card of the match. Flank Rodney Chikamhi was sent to the sin bin for a head-butt.

FNB CPUT enjoyed plenty of possession and territory in the final 20 minutes. Christopher Andrews looked to have scored the match-winning try, but the TMO ruled that the wing had failed to ground the ball. Following Bovu’s intercept and Chiwara’s conversion, there was further drama as FNB UFH conceded a penalty after the hooter. The long-range attempt by Snyders, however, was wide of the posts.

FNB Varsity Shield Round 6 results and scorers:

FNB CPUT 18 (6) – Tries: Keano Cookson, Ché Klaasen. Conversion: Feghorn-Leigh Synders. Penalties: Snyders (2).

FNB UKZN Impi 20 (10) – Tries: CJ Osode, Zamakuhle Zulu. Conversions: Dawro Kock, Jarryd Nicholls. Penalties: Kock, Nicholls.

FNB Player That Rocks: Ché Klaasen (FNB CPUT)

FNB Varsity Shield Round 5 results and scorers:

FNB CPUT 14 (7) – Tries: Christopher Andrews, Caine Stadler. Conversions: Feghorn-Leigh Snyders (2).

FNB UFH Blues 16 (9) – Try: Migcobo Bovu. Conversion: Keith Chiwara. Penalties: Chiwara (3).

FNB Player That Rocks: Caine Stadler (FNB CPUT)
