Fashion Show

First-year Public Relations students decided to showcase CPUT talent when raising funds for an upcoming student conference.

The students in collaboration with first and second-year fashion design students hosted the “The Next Trend Fashion Show”, which took place at the Cape Town campus, on the bridge connecting the shuttle point and the commerce building.

The event is part of a fundraising initiative for the Public Relations Institute of South Africa Student Association (PRISASA) conference taking place on 6 November 2012. The conference forms part of the students’ practical component of their studies.

And the result was nothing short of fantastic.

The students decided to use the theme of re-use and recycle and produced 30 original garments from second-hand clothing.

Adding to the collaborative effort, the team was also assisted by Somatology students.

Some of the guests included Tanya and Clifford Manganyi from BOSS Models, as well as fashion blogger Lawrence Dube.

Design Graduate Exhibition open till Friday

The country’s latest crop of hot young designers showcased their work at the annual Informatics and Design year-end exhibition on Tuesday.

The fashion show is the highlight of the exhibition which will open for the rest of the week from 9am to 4pm and takes place in the Multi-purpose Hall at the Cape Town campus.

The doors of the entire design school are flung open for the four-day event and prospective students, parents, industry partners and staff are invited to peruse the graduates’ body of work.

This includes the journalism, jewellery, industrial, graphic, fashion, and photography departments.

Yesterday fashion students exhibited their work to a jam-packed audience filled with journalists, photographers, industry artists and family and friends.

The big winner of the night was BTech student Tamara Dyson who was recently picked as the winner of the Mr Price/Elle Rising Star award.

Earlier that evening she also received a special commendation from the Dean of the Informatics and Design Faculty for scoring the highest marks in her class.

Other students to receive special industry awards included Kelli Botha who recently shared a Woolworths shop front window exhibit with fellow student Caela Viviers.

Clean Green Fashion

CPUT students explored their creative side while promoting recycling and an environmental awareness during the recent Green Campus Initiative Fashion Show.

Students were involved in all aspects of the fashion show including the design, modeling, styling and music and lighting. The brief was for students to create a fashion look made entirely out of recycled materials and the results were breathtaking.

Co-ordinator of the event Melani-Ann Hara says she is immensely proud of the 14 designers and 28 models who participated in the show, most of whom are students in faculties not connected to fashion design.

“It’s been quite a while since we have been able to socialize in this way and this was an ideal opportunity for students to connect and learn about how they can reduce, re-use and recycle.

Nursing student Ferial Galant, 18, says she tried to achieve a classy streetwear look that incorporated recycled material but was still edgy and fashionable.

“I used household items that could be recycled like bottles and plastic bags and it took me four days to complete my look,” she says.

Ferial also encouraged a good friend Wesley Hendricks to model her look and says she was grateful to him for helping her refine and present the look successfully.

Environmental Management student Wakuenda Alex, 25, says he saw the callout for designers and was immediately interested because of the green fashion element.

“I had so much fun exploring fashion in this way, me and my friends spent days on campus coming up with ideas and the type of materials that could be used,” he says.

“It was really fun to participate in-person and interact with people.”

Wesley Hendricks was crowned Mr Green Campus Initiative with first place awarded to Okuhle Lingani.

Fashion on film

Fashion on film

Fashion students recently got a chance to watch their showreel at The Labia cinema in Cape Town.

Third year and BTech Fashion students each had to work on a short video clip explaining their design collection and these were put together into a film which was screened to parents, staff and students for the first time.

The “film premiere” took the place at the annual fashion show which the Design Department used to organise for Fashion students to strut their stuff.

Fashion programme leader Annadine Vlok says they had not been able to do the annual fashion in the Multi-purpose Hall on District Six campus for several years so they decided to try something new.

They used the money earmarked for the fashion show to pay CPUT Film & Media students to partner with the Fashion students to create short film clips. The brief was each student had to present their work in a clip that was one to two minutes long.

“It’s fresh. No other fashion school makes a film about the students’ work in this way. It showcases the garments in a better way,” explained Vlok.

The short films ranged in style from short stories to psychedelic, colour-saturated pop-up videos showcasing various garments. Film students matched up garment themes to film techniques, all in service of showing off the clothes the fashion students had designed.

The Fashion lecturers helped the Film and Media students with advice and lecturer Shaun Smith compiled the film, even stepping in to help finish some of the clips.

Vlok said lecturers Jas Myburgh and Walter Buchholz also helped coordinate the films and the programme would definitely try this again next year. They would also work with the Film and Media lecturers to co-ordinate their schedules to make the fashion film project a bridge between the programmes.

The film was played on a loop when the Design students’ work was displayed at their year-end display at Media City and will eventually find a home on CPUT’s Youtube channel.
