Bursaries for deserving students

The Faculty of Business is helping learners from disadvantaged communities achieve their dream of acquiring education by donating to community-based organisations set up for this purpose.

One such initiative to benefit from this gesture is the Mitchells Plain Role Model and Bursary Trust, which was established by CPUT’s Chancellor and Minister in the Presidency, Trevor Manuel.

The trust has been supported by the Faculty of Business which handed over a generous donation.

Manuel recently convened a Mitchells Plain Education Summit at Glendale High School where he committed himself to work with the community to establish the trust, which is aimed at supporting deserving learners from 16 high schools in the area.

Donations from private and corporate donors made it possible for the trust to award the bursaries to 16 learners, who were nominated by their school based on their 2012 academic performance.

Dr Reedwaan Ismail, Manager of Strategic Projects and Initiatives at CPUT who represented the faculty at the summitsays each student received a bursary of R10 000.

“Should they succeed in 2013, they will be supported again in 2014 and for a final year in 2015,” says Ismail.

Reviving the culture of reading among students

Students in the Faculty of Business showed their awareness of news and current affairs during a reading competition which saw the three top groups walking away with prize money totalling R10 000.

The Biz Quiz saw students from various departments form teams participating in the competition, which was aimed to make reading fun.

“Students’ inability to read well, as well as their indifference towards reading, is a common concern among academics,” says Carol Whiting, Language Co-ordinator in the faculty.

“Research has also shown that most students do not read at a level required for academic success at a university.”

Previously Peninsula Technikon ran successful reading competitions, and the Unit for Language and Professional Communication re-launched it this year.

The competition ran over seven weeks with a quiz every Friday. Students were required to read the Business Day of a particular week and answer questions on articles in the newspaper. Copies of Business day were donated to the faculty for this purpose.

The team from the Retail Business Management Department scored the highest number of points and won the coveted prize money of R 5 000, the Management Department took the second spot and won R3 000 and the Human Resource Management Department walked away with R2 000 for their efforts.

Every student who participated in the competition received a certificate of recognition.

CPUT reaches out to learners

As part of its community engagement initiatives, the Faculty of Business collaborated successfully with Sinenjongo High School in Milnerton.

The Khula Sonke Tutorial programme was conceptualised early this year as a life skills, accounting and economics tutorial programme offered to Grade 10 learners from Sinenjongo High School in the Joe Slovo Settlement in Milnerton.

Research has shown that Grade 10 is strategically a good level to start this type of intervention as learners in this age group join schools in the Western Cape in search of a better standard of education.

The aim of the project was to assist learners and teachers with teaching and learning accounting and economics while at the same time developing the learners’ life skills.

The tutorials were offered every alternate Saturday from April to September and 49 learners from the school were bussed to the Bellville campus where they were taught and supported by 15 student tutors.

The learners were awarded with certificates of completion and tutors received certificates of participation.

Lecturer Carol Whiting, who co-ordinates the programme, says feedback from learners and tutors, as well as preliminary evaluation indicates that the project was highly valued and had contributed to the academic success of the learners.

Community Engagement and Work Integrated Learning Director, Dr Joyce Nduna, says the project articulates well with CPUT’s mission and the national vision.

CPUT donates to the homeless

The Faculty of Business donated ten boxes of food and clothing to The Haven Night Shelter for homeless adults.

The shelter is located in close proximity to the university’s Cape Town campus and houses close to 100 homeless adults.

Associate Dean of the Faculty of Business Ivan van der Heever says the donations were received from the faculty’s staff members as part of the Mandela Day Project.

“We decided to start with the community that’s closest to the campus,” he says.

Sheila Jacobs, manager at the shelter, welcomed CPUT’s donation.

She says part of their mission is to find permanent homes for homeless individuals, whether with their relatives or any other parties.

The shelter has a social worker who assesses new clients’ needs as well as a skills trainer who provides training in various fields.

Jacobs says they also have several fieldworkers who patrol suburban areas and rescue homeless individuals who are taken in by the haven. Individuals can stay at the shelter for up to nine months.

To carry out its mandate, the shelter relies on donations from the community and funding from the Department of Social Development.

The faculty is currently looking at further collaborations with the shelter.

Sports Tourism Research

A group of CPUT researchers are involved in groundbreaking research on international sporting events.

Ass Prof Kamilla Swart, from the Faculty of Business, recently returned from the London 2012 Olympics, where she and several Masters students conducted research on the event.

During the past few years, Ass Prof Swart conducted various sport-related research at the Beijing 2008 Olympics and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

This latest research project, explored the safety of tourists and locals during the sporting event.

As part of their research, the CPUT group interviewed a large number of tourists and locals and conducted 350 surveys in just one week.

For the first time ever, the research group made use of iPads to record the interviews.

“Nobody perceived it as unsafe. The people who were cautious about safety were the locals,” says Tracy Daniels, one of the students.

During the trip, Ass Prof Swart also presented a paper with Sport Management lecturer, Brendon Knott, at the annual International Sport Business Symposium.

The paper titled, “Mega-events and the Football Sport Tourist – From Beijing 2008 to South Africa 2010,” profiles the football sport tourists at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa.

The group plan to conclude their research project during the next few months.

Third Business Graduation

“Never, ever stop learning!”

These were the words of Casper de Villiers, founder and Operations Director at Clickatell, the world’s most trusted mobile messaging platform.

He was speaking at the Second Ceremony of the faculty of Business held on the Cape Town campus of CPUT this morning.

Hundreds of students received their National Diplomas and BTech degrees in Accounting, Cost and Management Accounting, Financial Information Systems, Internal Auditing and Office Management and Technology.

Guest speaker De Villiers, an alumnus of CPUT, completed his studies in Retail Business Management in 1994. He’s now responsible for Clickatell’s complete global messaging supply chain and has played a key role in developing the world-class service centre that currently services customers around the globe.

He gave an inspiring speech to the packed auditorium, spelling out several key pointers to success in today’s ever-changing business world. “Don’t let the opinions of others cloud your inner voice, and when you make a mistake, get up, and start over again until you get it right. Don’t live somebody else’s dream and be excellent in your job –if you don’t enjoy your job, you can never excel at it.”

To rousing applause, de Villiers implored his audience to put products and people before profits, to draw on one’s family and friends for support and to give back to the community once success has been achieved.

Graduation ceremonies in the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Education and Social Sciences and Information and Design continue this evening on the Bellville campus, while the third and final ceremony of the Business Faculty takes place on Wednesday at the Cape Town campus at 10am.

Graduate Centre for Management students support shelter for female street children

‘On top of the world’ was the theme for a fundraising breakfast and guided walk on Table Mountain, organised by the Graduate Centre for Management’s Introduction to Event Management students, on 5 September 2009.

The short course students managed to raise in excess of R5000.00 in cash and kind thanks to the support of partner donors, students and staff.

The charity the students chose to support was Ons Plek, an organisation that assists girl street children, situated off Adderley Street in the centre of Cape Town. Their mission statement is passionate and simple: ‘To make a substantive improvement in the lives of female street children.’

The name Ons Plek originally derived from the delighted “a place for us” response of the girls who were among Cape Town’s ‘invisible street children.’ When Ons Plek Shelter opened in 1988, it was the only intake shelter and 24 hour assessment centre for girls in Cape Town.

The ‘On top of the world’ theme was chosen to evoke both the steep rise up Table Mountain and the idea of rising above steep challenges.

At the fundraising breakfast, Guest Speaker Yumna van der Schyff, a social worker, told guests, students and sponsors that every year approximately 150 girls, between the ages of 8 and 18 are left in town, sent away, or leave home to escape physical abuse and neglect. Some say that they “eat better on the street than they do at home.”

During the event, international visitors, who happened to be seated at a nearby table, were so moved by the personal testimony of Allerease, that they made a spontaneous cash donation. Allerease is a former Ons Plek resident, a university graduate and current volunteer who is married with three children. She is living proof that the cycle of violence can be broken with the loving care and support of social workers and volunteers.

She said that the girls are “empowered to cope with life” and are “instilling a sense of responsibility for themselves.” A little bit of glitz and a whole lot of glamour was added to the occasion by Master of Ceremonies Zikhona Mda, who appears in the TV series Montana, and is a CPUT alumnus.

Lecturer Pierre le Roux said that he was proud of the students as the event was organised efficiently and had created awareness for a valuable project.

Ons Plek welcomes committed volunteers who can assist with a range of activities including supervising homework, computer, leadership and life skills training, swimming and baking. Anyone able to make a donation, in cash or kind, or willing to assist, particularly with a community project in Phillippi, is welcome to e-mail Pam Jackson or Yumna van der Schyff on This email address is being protected from spambots. Business Faculty holds graduation for National Higher Certificate in Accountancy

The CPUT Faculty of Business recently held its graduation for students who had obtained the National Higher Certificate in Accountancy. Ceremonies took place on the Bellville, Wellington and Cape Town Campuses. Approximately 550 Accountancy students received the certificates.

The National Higher Certificate in Accountancy ceremonies are held separately from the main April graduation due to the size of the Business Faculty. It is the largest of the six Faculties and therefore produces extremely high numbers of graduates.

Bellville Campus held its ceremony on 9 May 2008 in the Auditorium. The Faculty awarded about 162 certificates. The keynote speaker was Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Business Schalk van der Merwe. The ceremony attracted 300 spectators.

Wellington Campus awarded about 23 certificates during its ceremony on 22 May. Cape Town Campus held its ceremony on 23 May. This ceremony attracted about 800 spectators and awarded about 365 certificates.

According to Student Administration Assessment Co-ordinator (Cape Town Campus) Tiffany Williams, the National Higher Certificate in Accountancy graduation is held once every year and students must pass all their 13 subjects over a period of two years in order to receive certificates. Ms Williams confirmed that the number of recipients has increased compared to the previous years.

Accountancy Head of Department Willem Lotter said that the graduation does not mark a formal exit point to a student's Accountacy studies but is an acknowledgement of the completion of a two year certificate that helps students gain access to the main stream of Accountancy and its related fields.

Business Faculty Director Llwellyn Appel has confirmed that almost all of previous certificate recipients have continued to study towards their third year (Diploma level) which he views as very encouraging.

Business Faculty presents SAP course for the first time at CPUT

The CPUT Faculty of Business and SAP Africa’s SAP University Alliance programme recently presented, for the first time, an introduction to SAP01 training.

The course focused on providing insight to lectures who on completion, will be able to plough back the knowledge and help senior students gain experience in SAP. The course ran from 26 to 29 October.

The SAP University Alliances program is a global programme that provides university faculty members with the tools and resources necessary to teach students how technology can enable integrated business processes and strategic thinking and gives students the skills to add immediate value to the marketplace.

Ferdo Maree, a lecturer at CPUT said, “We are very excited to be part of this initiative. We joined the Alliance to offer hands-on experience on SAP to help increase graduate recruitment rates when the student leave varsity for the job world or if they wish to be entrepreneurs.”

A deeper understanding of SAP solutions can jumpstart students’ careers by combining business process knowledge with enterprise software expertise to develop the most valuable skills portfolio in the market today.

“Our focus as Cape Peninsula University of Technology is to empower tomorrow’s workforce through education,” said Maree.

Career-ready graduates, as part of an educated workforce, are fundamental for competitiveness and success in today’s global business environment. At regional and global levels, a combination of business and information technology (IT) skills as well as industry expertise, promote stability and economic growth.

“Our education and training programmes enable users and partners to leverage ICTs and business process know-how as drivers of growing economies as well as sustainable communities,” explained Max Fuzani, SAP Africa University Alliances manager .

Course material included SAP Introduction, Navigation; System-wide concepts; Logistics; Accounting; Human Resources; Products, solutions and services among others.

Delegates from Namibia Polytechnic, University of the Western Cape; Free State University as well as the Cape Peninsula University of Technology attended the four day training.

Extended Public Works Programme and City staff congratulated

The Graduate Centre for Management recently handed over certificates to hundreds of staff from the City of Cape Town and Extended Public Works.

Addressing the ceremony at the Bellville campus yesterday the City’s Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille says the best way to build a well-run city is maximizing the potential of city staff through effective training and development.

“We understand that if we invest in the people who work for the City, we are investing in service delivery, and in the provision of more opportunities for more of our people,” De Lille told the audience.

CPUT was awarded the tender to provide accredited Adult Education and Training to City staff with the objective of developing their communication, budget management, diversity management and decision-making skills.

“Today, 243 staff members have completed this training,” De Lille explained.

“This year it was decided that 216 EPWP (Expanded Public Works Programme) workers would also be afforded the opportunity to receive this training.”

Dean of the Faculty of Business, Prof Mzikayise Binza says CPUT has provided the city staff with knowledge that will contribute to their future success and advancement in the workplace.

“You have proven your ability to learn and dedicate yourselves and your time, to the achievement of a goal in your life,” he says.

Beryl Liebetrau, Acting Head of the Graduate Centre for Management, says it was a privilege to work with the city staff.

Students hit the street to assist The Big Issue vendors

First-year Marketing students put their classroom skills to test to make a difference in the lives of The Big Issue street vendors.

Students used word of mouth, flyers and social media to advertise the magazine and hit the city streets to sell the magazine alongside vendors.

A group of students were assigned to one vendor and they then had to use all their marketing savvy to boost sales.

The project is a collaboration between the Marketing Department, the Language Unit in the Faculty of Business and the Service Learning Unit.

The Big Issue is a non-profit organisation that assists unemployed adults to earn a living through a developmental employment programme.

The project’s brief was to integrate community engagement into the language curriculum.

Yesterday students showcased their work and reflected on their experiences.

In the feedback session, students said they learnt a lot more from the project than in the classroom as they were challenged to use skills some did not even think they had such as dealing with nasty rejection from motorists as they were selling the magazine.

The vendors were also given gifts and certificates during the round-up session.

Collaboration with African institutions

True to its vision of becoming the heart of technology education in Africa, CPUT is strengthening ties with its African counterparts.

Recently two staff members from the Faculty of Business, Mandie Richards and Belinda Berman, visited The School of Management Sciences at Polytechnic of Namibia to discuss various areas of collaboration.

CPUT and Polytechnic of Namibia signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2013.

“This has been a positive move, as it provided an opportunity for a cultural exchange with our African counterparts,” says Richards, a senior lecturer in the Office Management and Technology Department.

Richards says the collaboration between the two institutions emphasises that international exchanges also include exploring educational, social and economic opportunities in Africa.

“Each session provided so many opportunities for future collaboration and strengthening the ties with our Africa partners,” she says.

The faculty is looking forward to staff and student exchanges between the two institutions, especially within the Office Management and Technology Department. Other areas of collaboration include curriculum development as well as joint research initiatives.

Discussions also focused on student and staff development programmes as well as transformation.

Your country needs you

Wholesale &Retail (W&R) SETA CEO Joel Dikgole had some sobering words for Faculty of Business graduates today. In his address to the latest crop of graduates from the Entrepreneurship, Event Management, Retail Business Management, Real Estate and Sport Management Departments, Dikgole drew attention to the scourge of poverty and unemployment in South Africa.

“With unemployment running at 25% and service delivery protests happening with alarming regularity, graduates must come up with innovative solutions to tackle these challenges.” Dikgole says that no country in the world can overcome such social ills without investing in skills development and education of all its citizens, as countries like Singapore, Japan and Korea did to become the economic giants they are today.

Dikgole’s sentiments were made a reality recently when the W&R SETA invested over R11 million to establish Africa’s first Wholesale & Retail (W&R) Leadership Chair in Africa, to be based at the CPUT. It is a direct result of the SETA’s initiative to cooperate with universities to encourage the production of academic and applied research in this sector of business.

Another highlight of today’s ceremony was the awarding The Vice Chancellor’s Medal to Nyasha Felistas Chikovo. Nyasha, who hails from Zimbabwe, registered for her National Diploma in Retail Business Management in 2010. She achieved distinctions in 28 out of the 30 modules she completed in her National Diploma and BTech degrees.

Graduates from the Building, Chemical Engineering, Cartography, Civil Engineering, Surveying, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying Departments are set to receive their diplomas and degrees this evening.
