Career Fair creates crucial connections

The annual CPUT Career Fair connected students with a broad range of industry professionals for a day of meaningful engagement, networking and career exploration.

The event, which was held at the Major Sports Hall, Bellville Campus, featured 25 industry exhibitors from various sectors including banking, technology, health and government.

The fair was officially opened by A/Prof Nicole Brooks, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Wellness Sciences, who said it served as a platform where career aspirations met real-world opportunities.

“A career fair, such as this event today, serves as a bridge connecting students with potential employers. It is an important platform that bridges the gap between academic learning and the professional world, offering immediate and long-term benefits to our students, to our graduates, our academic departments and the various industries alike.”

Brooks said CPUT was honoured to have such a diverse and dynamic group of organisations, with a range of established professionals, participating in the fair.

“To all our exhibitors, thank you for making the time to invest in our students and for contributing to the development of future professionals. Your presence her today not only showcases the landscape of career possibilities, but also reflects your commitment to talent development, mentorship and partnership with higher education, particularly with CPUT.”

Luvuyo Kakaza, Manager: Cooperative Education Unit, said he hoped strong relationships would be built to help ensure work placement for students and graduates

“We want CPUT to be the institution of choice when it comes to appointing students and graduates.”

CPUT’s annual Career Fair, which began on Wednesday, 17th August at the Bellville Campus, has drawn large numbers of students eager to learn more about the careers that await them. The two-day event allows potential employers to reach and interact with students in a relaxed atmosphere. With many of these organisations busy with their talent search and internship recruitment processes, a visit to the fair will ensure all students get first-hand information on these opportunities.

Fundiswa Nofemela, the Manager of the Co-operative Education Department, says organisations from the Financial, Management and Retail Sectors including ABSA, the Institute of Accounting and Commerce, Rio Tinto Management Services, Oasis Asset Management, EDCON, Fruit and Veg City &  Freshstop, Truworths as well as The Foschini Group will be in attendance.

“The Engineering Sector is represented by Aveng Grinaker-LTA, Haw and Inglis Civil Engineering, NMC, Siemens,Tellumat and Toyota, and from the Applied and Medical Science Sectors, Synexa Life Sciences, Mediclinic and Appletiser will be there. We also have a strong presence from the Government Sector represented by departments from both the National and Provincial Governments,” says Nofomela.

Nofomela adds that the Student Counselling Department, who run the ‘Jump Start Your Career Workshop’ which covers job search strategies, CV and cover letter writing as well as mock interviews will also be at the Career Fair. They’ll be ready to help the students with their CV's if needed.

“The Career Fair is one of the institutional events that increase the visibility of potential employers on our campuses and bring job opportunities closer to our students.  We therefore urge ALL students to visit the Fair and meet their future employers."

On Thursday 18th August, prizes were awarded to exhibitors with the best 'attention-grabbing and informative' stalls. Tellumat walked away with first prize, with Fruit & Veg City in second place and Truworths in third.

Bellville Career Fair is big success

Students and graduates came face to face with potential employers at the annual CPUT Career Fair hosted at our Bellville Campus on Tuesday.

The Career Fair, which moves to the Cape Town Campus on 14 August. boasted some of the biggest industry names like Siemens, General Electric, Lafarge, Distell and the Department of Labour to name just a few.

For the first time students also had access to hundreds of job adverts thanks to live streaming monitors that advertised vacant posts for companies not exhibiting.

The Student Career Portal which enables students to load their CVs for potential employers to view was also launched.

Anyone interested in attending on the 14th should bring along their CV’s as well as a pen and notebook to jot down important contact information.

Manager for Co-operative Education, Fundiswa Nofemela, says students should take the opportunity of attending a career fair seriously and come prepared with plenty of questions as well as doing research on potential employers.
