CPUT recently hosted SA’s first international Sustainable Sanitation Waste and Water Management Conference.
The four-day conference received funding pledges to eradicate pit toilets in rural schools. “I received funding from Wesgro and WTA (World Toilet Association) to sponsor the legacy of the conference which is to get rid of pit toilets in schools in rural area through building more dignified toilets and raising awareness on sanitation,” said conference manager and CPUT researcher Aifani Tahulela.
Tahulela said she needs to submit a costing proposal to the funders after conducting research about how many such schools exist in the country. She would also like to implement the eradication project in rural areas in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo.
Wesgro is the official tourism, trade & investment promotion agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape.
The WTA is an international organisation dedicated to protecting lives through the improvement of sanitation via toilets.
Held under the theme “Optimal sanitation waste and water management for a sustainable globe”, the conference brought together practitioners and academics from all over the world with interest in discussing the state of sanitation provision and methodologies in Africa as well as the effects and challenges associated with the state of African water services such as pollution of dams, rivers and groundwater as well as water scarcity.
Tahulela added that Suwon City Municipality of South Korea made it possible for the conference to be a success, alongside the WTA who co-hosted the conference with CPUT and North West and Limpopo universities.
Submitted conference papers will be peer-reviewed and accepted papers published in the peer-reviewed journal issue and conference proceedings.
