Outstanding researcher reaches SAWISA finals

Prof Agnes Chigona feels profoundly honoured and grateful to be selected as a finalist for the 2026 South African Women in Science Awards (SAWISA). This recognition is not only a personal achievement but also serves as a testament to the vital work of dedicated researchers committed to advancing knowledge and making a positive social impact.

Chigona, who was born and raised in Mulanje, Malawi, notes: “I hope this recognition encourages more young women to pursue careers in research, science, technology, and higher education. It also reflects the excellent support provided by CPUT in fostering research excellence”.

The Directorate Research Development (DRD) also extended its warmest congratulations on her selection as a finalist for the 2026 SAWISA Awards, stating that this prestigious achievement is a well-deserved recognition of her outstanding research contributions, academic excellence, and dedication to advancing scientific knowledge. “Your accomplishment reflects not only your individual commitment to excellence but also the strength of the research community at our institution.”

Growing up on a tea estate as the seventh-born of thirteen children, the National Research Foundation (NRF) SARChI Chair (Tier 1) in Teacher Education and Director of the Global Institute for Teacher Education and Society (GITES), joined CPUT in 2011 and has had the privilege of serving the institution in various academic and leadership roles. Her research focuses on teacher education, educational technology, digital inclusion, and the role of emerging technologies in education. Her educational journey began in Malawi before taking her to New Zealand, Germany, and ultimately South Africa. The resilient, hardworking, collaborative scholar who is committed to continuous learning holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Malawi, a Graduate Diploma from the University of Waikato in New Zealand, a Master's degree from Otto-von-Guericke University in Germany, and a Doctor of Education from CPUT.

The community in which she grew up taught her that success is not an individual achievement but something that should ultimately benefit others. These experiences continue to shape her commitment to educational equity, social justice, and creating opportunities for those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Growing up in a large family in a rural area, she came from a humble background where resources were often limited. However, values such as hard work, perseverance, respect, and community support were abundant. This experience taught her resilience, responsibility, and the importance of supporting others.

“My parents worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for their children despite many challenges. Their commitment to education inspired me from a young age.

Chigona, who enjoys spending quality time with family and friends, gardening, travelling, and learning about different cultures and educational systems around the world, says her success has been shaped by perseverance, lifelong learning, strong mentorship, and a belief that education can transform lives.

“I have always viewed challenges as opportunities for growth and learning.”

She continues: “I am motivated by the possibility of making a meaningful contribution to society through education and research. Seeing students succeed, especially those who overcome significant barriers, is one of my greatest sources of inspiration. I am also inspired by remarkable women who have broken barriers in academia and by my own parents, whose sacrifices made my educational journey possible.”

One highlight of her career has been contributing to teacher education and educational technology research addressing real-world challenges in underserved communities. She has also enjoyed establishing international collaborations, securing research grants, mentoring postgraduate students, and leading GITES. The encouragement and support from colleagues across the institution have contributed significantly to her professional growth and accomplishments. Research excellence is always a collective effort, and she is grateful to be part of such a supportive academic community.

The support of her family has also been invaluable throughout her career. “Their encouragement, understanding, and belief in me have enabled me to pursue ambitious professional goals.”

She continued: “Being selected as a SAWISA finalist is both an honour and a reminder of the responsibility we have as researchers to contribute to society. I hope that my journey demonstrates that with perseverance, support, and a commitment to education, it is possible to overcome barriers and create opportunities for others…”

She believes this achievement reflects the collective efforts of many people who have supported her throughout her journey, including mentors, colleagues, students, collaborators, and her family.
