FNB Varsity Shield 2026 kicks off this Friday and the first game of the season will see FNB CPUT take on FNB Madibaz (Nelson Mandela University) at the CPUT Sports Stadium in Bellville.

The game is scheduled to start at 5pm and will also be broadcast live on SuperSport.

Tickets for the game will go on sale from noon on 11 February via the cashiers in Bellville, District Six and Wellington.

The tickets cost R30 per person and only 2 000 tickets are available.

The FNB Varsity Shield and FNB Varsity Cup 2026 season was officially launched with a vibrant event at the V&A Waterfront amphitheatre, setting the tone for another epic year of student rugby and what promises to be another unforgettable season.

SuperSport presenter Cato Louw hosted interviews with the captains, giving fans insight into team expectations, leadership roles, and the excitement building ahead of the season which begins on 13 February for the Shield competition and 16 February for the opening round of the Cup tournament. The live show blended broadcast-ready moments with crowd interaction, reinforcing the tournament’s “Who’s NXT?” narrative and spotlighting the next generation of rugby talent.

The launch also featured an explanation of the newly introduced Tap or Kick rule aimed at promoting attacking rugby by giving teams who score a try to go for the conventional conversion or opt for a tap on the 22m line where they will have 120 seconds to score another try and gain a further 5 points.
