#CPUTWomen2021 - Zuki Makuzeni
DEDICATED: Zuki Makuzeni
Wednesday, 25 August 2021
Zuki Makuzeni has worked tirelessly to ensure that venues in the Department of Wellness Sciences are sanitised, that all covid-19 literature is present and that sanitisation stations and all protocols were implemented.
Makuzeni, a lab technician in the Department who joined CPUT in 2005, is one of many CPUT staff members who have been doing outstanding work to help the institution fight the pandemic.
Lecturer Michael Paulse said that during the severe lockdown periods in 2020, Makuzeni was solely responsible for preparing the department to ensure that it was Covid-19 compliant.
“As a colleague, Zuki is valued by both students and colleagues alike. She pays attention to detail and recognises how effective teamwork makes a difference, notices when people need extra support and can be relied upon at all times. In everything she does, she is enthusiastic, makes suggestions for improvement, but never forgets the importance of professionalism along with principles of Ubuntu.”
About her hard work in the fight against Covid-19, Makuzeni said: “This pandemic is universal. It has and still affects us all, whether directly or indirectly. While we have our individual responsibilities in this fight, I wanted to play my part in protecting our students and my colleagues. In this pandemic, nobody is safe until we are all safe.”
Her message to young women at CPUT is: “Don’t let anybody ever put you in a box and define for you what and who you should be. You only have one life and it is yours to live, nobody else’s.”
She says the highlights of her career at CPUT have been many great colleagues she has worked with over the years and the vast knowledge received from various spheres in the institution.
Asked which women inspire her, Makuzeni said: “There are a few well-known names but mostly I look up to any woman who has and continues to overcome hardship. These women are rarely celebrated
