Journalists from leading media houses across the city recently gathered at CPUT’s Cape Town Hotel School for the annual Media Mingle.
Among the guests were former Press Ombud Pippa Green, Chairperson of the CPUT Council Dr Laurine Platzky, and several proud alumni of the Journalism Department, many of whom now hold influential positions in newsrooms.
Hosted by the Marketing and Communication Department, the event provided a valuable platform for networking and dialogue between the University and media representatives.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Chris Nhlapo said it was a privilege to host the gathering during CPUT’s 20th anniversary year and reflected on the big industry names that had graduated from one of the country’s most successful journalism schools.
“It is always a pleasure to welcome one of our most important stakeholders – the media. It is even more special because so many of you are our alumni,” he said.
“We celebrate your successes, each time we see a byline from a reporter who graduated from our institution it instils a sense of pride.”
The guest speaker was executive leadership coach Karl Gostner who has mentored some of the top businesspeople in the country.
Gostner delivered a thoughtful address which expanded on some of the strategies which top leaders use to create more cohesive and productive teams. He also shared many anecdotes from his own practice and encouraged the audience to invest in their soul and self while pursuing strategy as well.
Dr Garth van Gensen, Director of the Marketing and Communication Department, delivered a vote of thanks and emphasised the University’s wish to partner with the media in advancing CPUT’s three core missions, which are learning and teaching, research and community engagement.
