AdvDip: DO NOT USE advanced diploma

AdvDip: (advanced diploma)

The 1-year full-time Advanced Diploma in Architectural Technology programme allows a student to register for and complete five subjects in one year. It is offered through flexible learning design, comprising online learning and components of on-campus blocks throughout the year.

The 2-year part-time Advanced Diploma in Architectural Technology programme is offered through flexible learning design, comprising online learning, office-based mentoring and on-campus or online blocks totalling four one-week blocks per year.

The programmes are designed to accommodate a diverse student body including Diploma in Architectural Technology graduates, returning CPUT graduates, graduates from Higher Education Institutions across South Africa and the SADC countries, and mature and working professionals. Applicants who don’t meet the minimum academic requirements but have extensive architectural practice experience are invited to apply via a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. This process allows access into the programmes, as well as the possibility to earn credits for subjects based on an assessment of a portfolio of evidence.

2-year part-time programme: In year 1 students register for Practice 4, Environment 4 and Literacy 4, and the year 2 programme comprises Design 4 and Technology 4. A student may repeat only one of the year 1 subjects in year 2.

1 year full-time programme: Students register for all five subjects (Practice 4, Environment 4, Literacy 4, Design 4 and Technology 4) and complete them in the same year.

Part-time students are required to be employed and mentored by a professionally registered Senior Architectural Technologist or Architect, full-time or at least on a contract basis, for the duration of their studies. They are encouraged to register with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP), as Candidate Architectural Technologists, in order to upgrade their professional registration on or soon after graduation.

Full-time students are not required to be employed by a professionally registered Senior Architectural Technologist or Architect while studying on the programme, and thus they will not necessarily be eligible to upgrade their professional registration on or soon after graduation.

Career Information

Graduates are equipped to be Senior Architectural Technologists capable of independently researching technological innovations, and performing professional architecture services in technology, design and management in the public and private sectors of the built environment.

Advanced Diploma graduates will be independent thinkers who can assimilate broad aspects of information, analyse complex problems well and compile findings into coherent relevant and appropriate architectural design solutions. Graduates are aware of environmental and social sustainability and understand their responsibility in this regard.

Students are encouraged to register with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP), which is the professional body representing the Architectural industry in South Africa. An Advanced Diploma student should register with SACAP, based on having obtained a Diploma in Architectural Technology, as soon as possible. In the part-time programme, the two years’ work experience, which is accommodated in the programme, makes it possible for graduates to record their industry monthly training records and obtain professional registration soon after graduation.

Career Opportunities

The Senior Architectural Technologist is responsible for the application of construction technology in the design process. The main activities associated with this field are the production of drawings, detailing, presentation of drawings, model making, site supervision and monitoring and liaison with clients, engineers, municipalities, quantity surveyors and contractors.

Once the necessary experience has been gained, the Senior Architectural Technologist is able to competently handle small to medium size work independently.
