AdvDip: (advanced diploma)

The department offers an Advanced Diploma in Somatology that will allow students to broaden their scope of practice with new knowledge and skills in advanced therapies with a focus on anti-ageing and skin rejuvenation techniques.

This programme affords graduates the opportunity to advance their studies in the wellness sciences, allowing them to specialise in sought-after wellness therapies with an emphasis on scientific research. Graduates will be equipped to apply advanced wellness therapies, will be able to manage or start up a business enterprise with proficiency, and have the capacity to undertake research projects in wellness sciences.

Career Information
Graduates will be equipped to apply advanced wellness therapies, such as skin resurfacing techniques, laser and light therapies, permanent cosmetics and advanced complementary therapies. Skin resurfacing techniques focuses on anti-ageing therapies through controlled injury of the skin, enhancement of collaged and elastin production to rejuvenate the skin.

Skin resurfacing techniques offered in this programme include; chemical peels, microdermabrasion, micro-needling and Lamprobe. Complementary therapies such as Endermologie, Shiatsu and manual lymph drainage are also offered as part of the advance diploma. Furthermore, graduates will be able to manage or start up a business enterprise with proficiency, and have the capacity to undertake research projects in wellness sciences field. A career path in academia in somatology is also possible following completion of this programme.

Career Opportunities
Research forms a vital component of the Advanced Diploma in Somatology, where students will complete a research methodology course covering the main principles of research methodology, scientific writing in presentation of research and ethics.

The programme encourages research, entrepreneurship and industry development. Professional somatologists will be able to work in health and skincare clinics, wellness spas and cruise liners, locally or internationally.

Career Advantage
Students who complete the Advanced Diploma will be able to work as part of multidisciplinary teams as they progress with postgraduate studies to eventually become established researchers and scholars in the Somatology field. Students are involved in promoting the culture of research and scientific enquiry, this brings them closer to meeting the needs of industry requirements and further develop the somatology profession.

Admission Requirements
An overall 60% average for the Diploma in Somatology (or equivalent) qualification is required.

RPL processes will apply for students who have studied somatology in a different institution and would like to further their studies at CPUT.

Experiential Learning
Although the programme does not officially offer experiential learning as a subject for the Advanced Diploma, students are given an opportunity to form part of managing and marketing the departmental Wellness Clinic as part of their Salon management 4 module.

It is crucial for the Advanced Diploma students to participate in community service. They fulfil this role by providing their services to the communities such as old age homes, hospitals and any other organizations that requires somatology services.
