BHSc: MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE ARTICULATION PROGRAMME bachelor degree - bhsc

MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE ARTICULATION PROGRAMME

BHSc: (bachelor degree - bhsc)

The Department of Biomedical Sciences offers a qualification in the field of Medical Laboratory Science. Previously studies in Medical Laboratory Science were offered as a National Diploma in Biomedical Technology and a B Tech: Biomedical Technology, but these qualification has since been phased out. The 502 credit Professional Bachelor of Health Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science, has replaced the National Diploma as well as the B Tech degree at CPUT.

The Biomedical Sciences department at CPUT offers two articulation pathways between the old NQF qualifications and the new HEQSF aligned qualifications, namely:

1. Articulation from National Diploma Biomedical Technology (NQF level 6, 360 credits) to BHSc in Medical Laboratory Science (NQF level 8, 502 credits).

2. Articulation from B. Tech Biomedical Technology (NQF level 7, 120 credits) to BHSc in Medical Laboratory Science (NQF level 8, 502 credits).

Career Information
A qualification in Medical Laboratory Science leads to an interesting and challenging career for a dedicated, mature and professional person who wishes to pursue a career in the field of medical science. Qualified Medical Laboratory Scientists are employed in laboratories in blood transfusion services, private pathology practices, the National Health Laboratory Services, the Medical Research Council, forensic laboratories, veterinary practices and other disciplines such as pharmaceutical companies. Those wishing to pursue a career in research can be employed in research laboratories at academic institutions or private medical companies. Registered Medical Laboratory Scientists may also apply for a license to practice in a private capacity in their own laboratories.

Career Advantage
An articulation agreement will promote student mobility within academic pathways towards higher qualifications. In the past students were able to articulate to a Master’s degree by completing the National Diploma in Biomedical Technology and the BTech degree in Biomedical Technology. This progression route is no longer valid with the introduction of the HEQSF and therefore alumni who have completed these qualifications can only progress towards a Master’s degree by means of a clearly defined articulation route via the four year Bachelor’s degree. This articulation process will enable individuals the opportunity to pursue higher qualifications which will lead to professional and personal enhancement.

An articulation agreement will also promote better professional status in the workplace and open up career pathways beyond that of a medical technologist. Currently Medical Technologists with a National Diploma and/or a B Tech degree in Biomedical Technology are confined to careers within clinical diagnostic laboratories. Career opportunities include jobs which were previously only accessible to medical scientist, for example Molecular Biology/Genetics field. Promotion opportunities are also more attainable as individuals will exit the course with an honours level degree as opposed to a national diploma. This articulation process will also create more diverse opportunities which include career options overseas as currently the National Diploma is not recognized internationally.
