The Department of Wellness Sciences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology offers a National Diploma and a BTech in Somatology.

Please note the following:

The 3 year ND: Somatology will be replaced with the 3 year Diploma in Somatology qualification as of the 2018 intake. These qualifications are very similar with minor modifications to subject names, course content, NQF levels and credits. The new qualification has been introduced to align with the new Higher Education qualification sub-Framework (HEQSF) as Gazetted by the South African Department of Education on 2 August 2013. The new HEQSF-aligned curriculum of the Diploma in Somatology qualification will provide the industry with multi-skilled, competent graduates able to apply and provide preventative and remedial therapies using diverse technologies within a multi-disciplinary wellness environment.

Note that undergraduate students who are currently registered for the ND: Somatology qualification will be allowed to complete their qualification in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the University.

National Diploma Somatology

The three year ND Somatology programme includes experiential learning (practical experience) in both second and third years where students are able to get hands-on experience in the workplace in addition to the theoretical components. Through the hands-on education approach students obtain the tools, the knowledge and skills they require and this affords learners excellent employment opportunities. Students also have opportunities to gain practical skills and experience by working in the Wellness Clinic at CPUT offering a range of treatments to clients within various communities. We pride ourselves on the involvement with community engagement projects facilitated by the university at care centres for the aged, hospitals and rehabilitation centres to develop social responsibility.

At the end of the third year, our students have the option to enroll for the CIDESCO examination that is internationally recognised and recommended for candidates who wish to work abroad. CIDESCO is the world’s most prestigious qualification in aesthetics and wellness therapies. This kind of qualification encourages exchange of professional knowledge within the field of Somatology and provides international recognition to the therapist in the Somatology industry.
