South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC)

The South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC) is the first national renewable energy technology centre in South Africa and has been established at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) - Bellville campus, Cape Town, South Africa. SARETEC expedites specialized industry-related and accredited training for the entire renewable energy (RE) industry including short courses and workshops.

SARETEC has established strong partnerships with government, academia, industry, associations and private sector companies within the Renewable Energy Sector. The facility is a green building and is designed to showcase the use of renewable energy and energy efficient technology. 


The South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC) is a state-of-the-art Renewable Energy training facility and offers an accredited qualification for Wind Turbine Service Technicians (WTST) for the South African Wind Energy industry against accredited South Africa Qualification Authority (SAQA) qualifications for the service, maintenance, trouble-shooting and repair of wind turbines and as a BZEE Academy network training partner can also offer some of the suite of courses from this industry recognised German Academy. Both these internationally recognised qualifications are offered fulltime and as modularized short courses.

SARETEC is a Global Wind Organisation (GWO) certified training facility, is ISO 9001 certified, and has positioned itself to offer the GWO Basic Safety Training (BST) and Basic Technical Training (BTT) certifications. GWO has developed a Standard Package for BST and SARETEC subscribes to the following

  • Electrical
  • In the Solar PV space, SAPVIA together with SARETEC and GreenCape with support from GIZ and DGS Berlin, in partnership with merSETA (the appointed development and assessment quality partner) have developed a 1-week reference training course tailored to PV installers in the market. The training curriculum of the 5 Day SAPVIA reference PV Installer Course covers the QCTO defined exit outcomes for the Solar PV Installer part-qualification This training allows the successful participant to enrol for the PV GreenCard Assessment to become a recognised and endorsed Solar PV installer.
  • SARETEC is also involved in the development and implementation of the new ICT4APP, which is a revolutionary 4IR development, which will offer the Solar Photo Voltaic Service Technician, a QCTO registered full apprenticeship qualification that is offered in 4 parts. SARETEC, in partnership with MerSETA, plays an important technical training support role in this qualification.
  • In collaboration with the South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC) the SA-German Chamber of Commerce & Industry is offering the European Energy Manager training programme EUREM. The training is held annually in Cape Town. EUREM is an extra-occupational, standardised training programme and international network for Energy Managers. The EUREM training enhances the skills of technical practitioners in the field of energy management and energy efficiency improvements. The training covers nearly all energy-relevant issues which can arise in manufacturing industries. The target group for the EUREM training are technical experts and companies’ executives as well as energy service provider.
