Department of Senior and Further Education & Training Phase studies
The Senior and Further Education departments that are located at the Mowbray and Wellington campuses offer initial preparation for teachers in the Senior Phase (Grades 8-9) and the FET Phase (Grades 10-12). The medium of instruction on the Mowbray Campus is English and the medium of instruction on the Wellington Campus is Afrikaans.
The B. Ed in the Senior Phase and FET teaching is a level 7 qualification that primarily aims to build the knowledge, skills, and values required for teachers’ professional practice. The programme structure of the qualification makes provision for the preparation for the Senior Phase in the first and second year which then leads to preparation for the Further Education and Training Phase in the third and fourth years. Students can choose from the following subjects for their school specialisations: Languages; Mathematics; Mathematical Literacy; Life Science, Physics and Chemistry (only offered at Mowbray); Computer Applications Technology; Engineering Graphic Design; Technology; Economic and Management Sciences (which is split between Economics, Business Management and Accounting as from the third year).
To lay the basis for continuing professional development through lifelong learning, the completion of a B Ed meets the minimum entry requirements to study towards a 120C NQF Level 7 Advanced Diploma in Education, or vertically, for admission into a cognate 120C NQF Level 8 B Ed Honours degree, or a cognate Postgraduate Diploma in Education Programme.
