Internal Auditing & Financial Information Systems

Internal Auditing & Financial Information Systems

The Department of Internal Auditing and Financial Information Systems focuses on developing the disciplines of internal auditing, risk management, financial control and governance, as well as accounting information systems. Its aim is to be recognised at national and international levels for excellence in creating and disseminating knowledge in its focus areas and to positively contribute towards South Africa’s economic and social development by producing innovative internal auditing and financial information systems graduates with competitive skills. In reaching these objectives the department contributes to the internal auditing and financial information systems professions, as well as to research and postgraduate studies within the discipline. The Department also involves itself with various research, community engagement and continuing education projects. The Department is proud to be the only academic department in the Western Cape to offer an array of focused competitive qualifications in internal auditing and financial information systems.

Internal Auditors perform tests that assure management that the controls, risk management and governance within the organisation meet the levels required by management. The accuracy of information generated and used in the organisation is reviewed by Internal Auditors to: manage the organization; safeguard assets; utilize resources and ensure compliance with laws. This insight into all business cycles coupled with experience equips internal auditors to later move into management. The accounting training also allows them to function in a financial accounting position.

The Department’s teaching activities are mostly aimed at developing students for the various professional qualifications related to the disciplines of internal auditing and financial information systems. Given the strong focus on internal auditing skills and the information systems in the programme, the knowledge base enables student to convert embedded knowledge practically into different applicable audit software programs. Students develop work relevant competence, as an aid to employment and career progression. Quality and maintaining high academic standards are the basis of all its programmes, courses and research activities. Internal Auditors may sit the Global International Institute of Internal Auditors board exam in South Africa and become members of an Institute recognised in 160 countries. The qualifications are also endorsed for access to the Internal Audit Technician (IAT) and Professional Internal Auditor (PIA) programs, giving access to lifelong professional development and support, through the opportunity to take up full membership with the IIA (SA), as the foremost institute for internal auditors in South Africa. Our industry partners can have confidence in the ability of our graduates and can recruit or promote internal auditors, knowing that they have proved capacity to perform the work required. Our qualifications are also aligned and endorsed by the IIA Global’s professional designation in South Africa, a professional qualifications required in the internal audit profession.
