Radiochemistry and Ion Exchange Chromatography Research Unit (RIECRU)

The Radiochemistry and Ion Exchange Chromatography Research Unit (RIECRU) is part of the Chemistry Department, Faculty of Applied Sciences. The RSSRU has been established in 2007 with the appointment of Prof. Nico van der Walt as researcher/advisor and supervisor of postgraduates.

The aim of the RIECRU is to translate results of our research on radiochemical methods and separation science into new and improved methods for elements and for the radiochemical separations of radionuclides and target material and the labelling of organic compounds with radionuclides to be used as radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic studies at nuclear medicine centres and for cancer therapy at oncology centres.

The newly developed methods and radiopharmaceuticals can be applied for radionuclide production centres in South Africa and the radiopharmaceuticals can be converted into commercially useful end products for the South African nuclear medicine and oncology communities.
