Functional Foods and Research Unit (FFRU)

img omega caro eThe Functional Foods Research Unit (FFRU) was established in 2009 and is part of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Department of Agriculture and Food Science. The FFRU’s aim is to translate results of research on essential fatty acids and micronutrients into new and improved functional food products or premixes with functional food characteristics for health promotion and disease prevention in South Africa. Functional foods are foods that, by virtue of physiologically active food components, provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition. The newly developed products, or premixes, are converted into commercially useful end products for the South African market.
