History and evolution of the HIV/AIDS Unit at CPUT

Prior to Feb 2004 HIV/AIDS Programmes were not centralised and were conducted on an ad hoc basis.

The HIV/AIDS opened on 2 February 2004 at the former Cape Technikon and the official launch of the HIV/AIDS office took place on 16 April 2004 to coincide with the commemoration of the Decade of Democracy in South Africa.

On 1 January 2005, the HIV/AIDS Office was granted official HIV/AIDS Unit status and in 2005 the Cape and Peninsula Technikons merged to form the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Between 2005/6 process of harmonising HIV/AIDS Programmes began in all earnestness. This resulted in the appointment of Ashraf Mohammed as the HOD of CPUT HIV/AIDS Unit for on the 1 July 2007.

In early November 2007 CPUT received confirmation of EU Funding in excess of 2 million rands. On 17 March 2008 the Official Opening Ceremony of its newly refurbished offices HIV/AIDS Unit office on Cape Town Campus took place with a keynote address made by Adrienne Belefonte (Harry Belefonte’s daughter from the USA).
