Safety Health and Environmental (SHE) unit

Under the Infrastructure Development and Facilities Management Directorate (ID & FM)

The University has a moral and legal obligation to safeguard and protect its students, employees and visitors against injury, occupational diseases and risk to their health and Safety and also prevent damage to property and environmental degradation.

The SHE unit is charged with the following:

  • Implementing structures and programs to ensure that hazards to the Health and Safety of persons within the University are identified and systemically actioned
  • Ensuring compliance to National legislation such as Occupational health and Safety act and the National Environmental Management Act, COID Act

How we execute these responsibilities:

  • Facilitating the establishment of Health and Safety Representatives committees
  • The appointment of all Legal appointments according to the OHS Act of 1993
  • Emergency Preparedness (e.g. Fire Drills)
  • Investigating Injuries on duty (IOD’s) and the administration of the COID Act
  • Inspecting buildings and workplaces for Occupational Health and Safety Compliances
  • Organise SHE awareness’s and facilitate for the training of employees and students in terms of Health and Safety
  • Ensure the provision of First Aid to students, staff and visitors
  • Identify, eliminate, control unsafe acts and conditions
  • Provide for the fire prevention and safety of all building
  • To ensure that contractors undertake their duties in a safe and responsible manner
  • Advising all university departments and units in terms of OHS compliance
  • Advocacy on events Safety
