DHET Accredited Publications

DHET approved research publications are submitted to the DHET at the beginning of May every year to claim subsidy. (The CPUT internal deadline is 20 March.) This process is governed by the DHET Research Outputs Policy of 2015, which was published in the Government Gazette on 11 March 2015. The DHET Research Outputs Policy (2015) replaces the DHET Policy for the Measurement of Research Outputs of Public Higher Education Institutions (2003). However, the 2003 Policy is still applicable to the submission of 2014 and 2015 output to the DHET in May 2015 and 2016 respectively. To access these policy documents, click here:

Research publications recognised for subsidy purposes include:

  • Articles in journals which appear on the lists of DHET approved journals supplied annually (scroll down for lists)
  • Peer reviewed scholarly books and conference proceedings that meet certain criteria (as outlined in this document)

The DHET informed us in November 2014 that the Mediterranean Journal of Social Science (as well as other journals published by the Mediterranean Centre of Social and Education Research) has been removed from the list of accredited journals and specifically the IBSS. ProQuest, the custodians of the IBSS, at the same time undertook to conduct further reviews of publishers on the Beall's list of predatory publishers which may be included in the IBSS databases, to try to identify other journals with similar problems. You can read the media statement issued by the DHET in this regard.

Please note that the Journal of Governance and Regulation is also no longer on the accredited lists.

Researchers are urged to make double sure that they check the academic credibility and review process of journals they submit their articles to, as the DHET has pointed out that its research output policy supersedes the list of accredited journal titles that it sends to institutions annually. The DHET reserves the right to withhold payment of subsidy in respect of any publication published in a journal that does not meet the criteria as outlined in their above-mentioned policy documents.

Submitting DHET accredited output to claim subsidy

Researchers should submit their publications to the Research Directorate according to the instructions in this document.

On receipt of a published journal article, with volume, issue, date and page numbers (not "accepted for publication", "in press" or in electronic format, unless an electronic journal), authors should submit a clear copy of the journal article, or a pdf, to Ms Lara Lee Smith (SmithLL@cput.ac.za) or Ms Luyolo Kamati (kamatiL@cput.ac.za) at the Research Directorate, Cape Town.

The same applies to books/ book chapters and published conference proceedings (with an ISBN/ ISSN and evidence of peer review).

Each submission to the Research Directorate should be accompanied by an explanation of the type of affiliation of all CPUT-affiliated authors. We need to know whether the author is a CPUT staff member, postgraduate student, adjunct professor, etc. This information can either be written in pencil on the actual publication or included in an email or filled in on this FORM.
