MAPS: CPUT is providing training in the area of Geographical Information Science

CPUT is playing a leading role in the training of Geographical Information Science (GISc) experts in South Africa.

The university’s efforts have been recognised by the South African Council for Professional and Technical Surveyors, who have accredited its three-year GISc diploma course. The council is one of the top professional bodies in the engineering sector.

Head of the Surveying Department, Raubie Raubenheimer, says this official endorsement is a huge feat for the department.

The accreditation will allow graduates of the course to become members of the council and will also play a huge role in ensuring they are employed in the sector.

Raubenheimer says the CPUT course is one of five offered at a university in South Africa that has received accreditation from the council.

The course, which was rolled-out last year, sees students complete two years of coursework and a full year of training in industry.

On completion of the course, graduates are skilled to capture, process, analyse and map spatial data. They are also skilled in various specialised computer programmes that are currently used in industry.
