Nominations for the election of a Chancellor

The members of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s Council and Institutional Forum are invited to nominate, by completing the relevant nomination form, persons who merit consideration for election and appointment as a Chancellor in the manner set out in the CPUT Statute and Procedures for nomination and election of a Chancellor.

The Chancellor is:

  1. The titular head of the University and presides at all the congregations, and in the name of the University, confers all degrees and award all diplomas and certificates.
  2. Nominated by members of Council and Institutional Forum; and
  3. Is elected and appointed by Council on the advice from the Institutional Forum.

1. Eligibility

1.1  No person who is on the University’s payroll; or who serves  as an external Council member; or who is student of the University shall be eligible for appointment.

1.2  Any person who is already serving as Chancellor of another university is not eligible for appointment.

2.1  Distinguished service or achievement in a relevant field of practice, profession, industry, community or communities; academic distinction nationally and/or internationally.

2.2  Outstanding achievement and distinction in the candidate’s area of practice, profession, industry or community that reveals exceptional personal qualities that the University may recognise and of such a nature that the appointment will bring acclaim to the University.

2.3  Ability to garner support for the realisation of the vision, mission and core values of the University, including the relevant support for the University’s core functions of research, teaching and community engagement by fostering meaningful partnerships with government, industry and business.

2.4  Possessing an unquestionable standard of integrity, credibility, exemplary behaviour and leadership skills that may be leveraged by the University.

2.5  Availability and readiness to attend the University’s functions, in particular, the graduation ceremony, as and when required.

2.6  Ability to inspire confidence with the broad University community and make critical interventions, when and where necessary, for the realisation of the University objectives.

In order for the nomination to be valid, it is requested that the duly completed nomination form be submitted in a sealed envelope marked “Confidential” and “Nomination for Chancellor” to the Office of the Registrar, which form must include the following information:

  1. the full signatures of the nominator, at least one seconder and the written acceptance by the nominee;
  2. a full curriculum vitae of the nominated candidate; and
  3. a brief statement of not more than 200 words by the nominator, reflecting the suitability of the candidate.
